6/8 Josh Mappin & Brothers Queens Cutlery, double thumb notch.

Just got this in from eBay. Very pleased, it's in great condition, all I did was run some diamond polish over it and clean it up with some simple green so far. I'll hit it with the Mother's and hone it tonight. No rust, just a bit of patina, no pitting, I quite like the blade. It feels good to hold with the double thumb notch.

My only real disappointment is the scales. The are faux ivory, off some other razor. They apparently didn't even fit, as part of the wedge has been cut away so that it will close without hitting them. It closes well and is functional, but man would I really love some actual ivory scales on this guy.

The only other mappin and brothers I've seen have been the lancet edge. Which I like a lot, but I'm extremely happy with this square point smiler for my 26 bucks.

I agree, that blade deserves ivory or honey blonde horn scales. Absolutely beautiful.

I hope to get one w/ the Dbl notch at some point, it looks like ATG on the neck would be a breeze.

Yeah, honey horn would be really good too probably. Probably rather cheaper too I guess.

I have ivory scales from about the same time period. I do not know if they will fit but pm me your address and I will get them off to you tomorrow. Gratis. If they do not work on that blade keep them for another of your finds.

Absolutely it is! It really is a nice blade. I love the double notch.

I expect it to. Honing a ding out of it now. Probably shave with it in the morning.

It's taking a little longer to hone than I expected. It's got just a bit of a frown in the very center of the blade. I don't want to breadknife it, as it is really not all that bad, so I'm just slowly and steadily honing it out and back to the smooth smile it deserves.

I've got a couple of dbl thumb notches and really like the feel shaving. Stropping, a little awkward, but you'll adjust to it quick enough.

Ivory makes my peening hammer tremble!! Or, Uh? :thinking: Maybe that's my hand shaking!!

I'll start doing some reading on peening ivory too. Perhaps even a post soliciting advice.

Ok, the scales arrived yesterday and are absolutely beautiful!

I just un pinned the blade and hammered a piece of tubing into the pivot pin hole, which was huge!

Now that's good and the pin fits through and much tighter with way less wiggle, I'm going to re pin this bugger into the ivory scales that Bob, lv6, gifted me.

Well, not a crack, but by far the worst pinning job I've ever done. The pin bent at some point, but I kept on going. I think I should have waited and gotten some washers as the old pin hole is just larger than I can really peen the rod out to. I had annealed the brass rod to make it softer. Maybe that's why it bent, or maybe I didn't keep the rod red long enough, so it wasn't as soft as it should have been, I don't really know.

What I do know is that I'm going to cut this pin off and try again.

But not today. I'm already past the point where I should have stopped.

I'll give it another shot over the weekend, once I decide what to do about washers and what kind I want to get.

I will say this. It's very definitely been a learning experience, and the blade looks awfully good in these scales!

That is one sweet looking razor, double thump notch from that maker, is a wonderfull find for sure, Enjoy!

Hey Josh,

I was thinking, maybe take an old razor and try repining it with the rod, etc. and annealing process you're going to use. When you've got it down, then ivory. Or even Popsicle sticks with an old blade and drill sticks with the same diameter pin hole. :D

Edit: Or, Popsicle sticks on the Mappin blade. I don't remember who it was but I know they recommended Popsicle sticks because if you could pin them without splitting them, then you were pretty safe to pin the ivory. :shrug: :gl:

Not a bad idea. I've pinned a couple with this rod already, just not annealed before. I'll try the popsicle sticks though. I'll get this pinned how I want it, no matter what.
