Just picked this up on ebay:
I KNOW I BANNED MYSELF but I couldn't resist, HECK I had the matching Original box for this sitting right here staring me in the face... What's a guy to do? LOL

Started cleaning it up and was wondering if you guys thought I could CA Glue the scale back together?
I have not unpinned it yet, but they are looking like they would be AWESOME!
I did "try" and give it a hone to make SURE it would sharpen up okay also...

A little Flitz and some super secret sanding tips from Hirlau and these are the results so far:

WELL....I TRIED to do the BEST I could...

I didn't know how to clean the scales any better. There were a couple "holes" and de-lamination on them so I CA glued them and sanded and sanded.... LOL
Hit it on the buffing wheels and then MAAS
Re-pinned with Double washers and tried to straighten the scales with steam and then a dowse in cold water.
I think it turned out pretty good. Did NOT get it to a mirror finish, left some character in the blade.

Looks like the repair job went well.
How is the edge?

Nice! Heiffors are great steel! 3 layers of tape and get with it! While you are at it, decipher that Hindi-wannabe on the blade for me! :D

Well I made SURE it would BEFORE the polishing up... I am actually TRYING to put one back on right this minute.

I am NEW to honing so bear with me....

So the hone wear on the razor itself is worn quite a bit and your saying I need 3 layers to make up for this right?:hmmm:
Then I can take ONE layer of tape off and "finish" hone it to shave ready (or as close as I can get) :confused:

No Ed. You got it backwards! Put 2 layers on and wear em in (dmt, 1000) . Get the bevel started a bit that way. Change the top layer as as needed, but finish it out for the nice, clean 1000 with a decent -looking bevel with a worn, intact top layer of tape on the spine. As you rock and roll, you will wear the top tape thin in places and not in others to compensate for that wonky spine.You will be able to see the wear on the tape should be wider in places where the spine was worn little and less where it was worn more heavily if you kept constant and even pressure. This is because you have created a "straight" spine with the unevenly worn tape (at least a staighter one!). Then you have a, hopefully, path to a bevel and can add a 3rd layer with which to start. Hone away and change ONLY the top layer. HINT! Make the top layer longer so it is easier to replace without disturbing the bottom layers! Look at it as angles. If you take away a layer, you are starting over in a bad way as the edge shall not touch the hone. If you add one as you get things straight, you should succeed quickly as fresh steel is applied smoothly to the hone, without hindrance from the spine, nor old, wide bevels.

Very Good Counsel about the tape Tom!

One thing that I always try to do is to make sure that the tape is even on both sides! For me, it seems to help!!

Thanks. For me, it is all about the bevel. Pressing down on places where the bevel is weak will wear the tape and bevel at that point(using circles some) and make the bevel wider at that point. Smoothing out with honing for another look. The straighter and more even and smaller you can get the bevel, the better. Irregardless of what the wear on the tape looks like, the 3rd layer will become the workhorse! Some old dudes honed one side way heavier than the other!

I kind of wish you would have kept yourself banned....I think that was the one I was looking at :mad: lol

I did what you suggested and took her for a stropping.
Showered and then made some later with AOS Sandlewood and some Gylserin.
NICE LATER, went on WARM!

Started the shave with NOT SO HIGH HOPES....

HOLY MOLEY! This this shaves G R E A T ! :y
It is FRIGGIN' SHARP also! I got a lil careless and took a nice SLICE into my top lip trying one of those "clean up passes" OUCH! :td

no worries I just won another razor tonight. now I'm banning myself

Got this out today and it had a TINY spot of what looked like rust on the edge. :dropjaw:

Tried to strop it out but NO LUCK with that.

Took it back to the hones and ended up going all the way back to my DMT. :cry:

The good news is I have honed a bunch more and I think my technique is getting better.

This was one of my better shavers and now it has moved to one of my GO TO razors! :tu

Yeah, Ed, that is the drawback of the multiple layered worn tape thing! To duplicate it, you have to kindof start over. It helps to make notes for future reference. Strop it heavy and often and keep it sharp! ;)
