DANG! Beat me to it! I was gonna say "Shingler's Hatchet". There more modern ones out there for shingling, but they look the same as this one.

Cool. Thank you guys. I figured that the back was for hammering, as the blade is a bit too thin for a splitting axe, and if it was meant to be hit with a sledge, it'd probably be thicker.
It's not that I need this axe, per se, as I am not in the roofing business, but there is always room for one more interesting looking axe :)
So how did you get everything home? Did you have trailer for your bike? I doubt the little wire basket on the handlebars could hold up to that anvil....
Ah no. When I first lifted that vise I knew straightaway that 50+ pounds of cast iron in my backpack would not be a great idea.
So I gave the guy 5 euros for putting the axe and vise aside for me, and at the end of the day I drove back with the car to pick them up.
Btw my mother told me that those ironing irons :) were 19th century. They're not actually worth anything of course, because there must be tens of thousands of those things still floating around at flea markets etc.
