I just bought a razor from classifieds, and it still appears to be available for others to try to buy. Is this normal? Does it take an action from the seller to mark the razor sold?
I got a confirmation from PayPal, so I figured that should trigger a sold or sale pending notice in the classified listing.

I've seen the same thing, but had no problems,,,soon somebody who has sold something will come along with the answer.

same thing happened with one of my razors. paypal got paid, razor didn't get a sold sign, and a second purchase occurred. I hated to disappoint somebody like that.
It did not work on my sale either, thankfully the second person asked a question before hitting the "buy it now" I just went into the ad and marked it sold.

Yes, the software is broken.
It is a piece of crap. We're actively looking into alternatives. The problem is that not all alternatives are desirable. They may work better, but come with strings. The latest option we investigated was very cheap but they insisted on being the payment processor and being the one dealing with financial disputes. Not entirely certain on this, but I think there was also the possibility they wanted a percentage on the sales.
They would provide a marketing place, but also take full control of what goes on there, which is hardly ideal. Plus they had no option to enforce limits. This makes sense from their pov. They just want people to sell as much as they can.

The limit system is also broken,you can have nothing for sale for weeks and still cannot post.
Why not create a system where SRP charges a percentage,leave all the paypal as it is.
I would gladley pay SRP say 3 % of my sales.

Yes, it is broken because it is not supposed to work that way. But in its broken state it works closer to how we want it to work. As Bruno said, it is meant for occasional sales, not for running the equivalent of a storefront. So X ads per Y time is what we want to limit, not X active ads at all times. Because the second option allows you to keep posting new stuff for sale as fast as it sells, becoming closer to a storefront.Quote:

I bought a razor last month under those circumstances. The Buy It Now feature aborted and gave me a message something was wrong. Somewhere in the process, the seller's email address was revealed, and I went to PayPal and paid him. I then contacted the seller because the Buy It Now button remained. In this instance I was the first buyer because the seller emailed me back and said, "I'm glad you told me, I'll shut down the ad now."
Had I not been the first buyer I would have understood and accepted reimbursement. We are a community of friends and I would expect anybody who missed out on a sale under these circumstances to do likewise.
Gugi made an important point that this is not intended to be a storefront. I think the intent of the Classifieds is to find a new home for items that are no longer being used and to help the seller recoup part of his investment. It's kind of a letdown to me to have members selling and never fellowship with us on the forum. I like to buy from people I know.

I have done the same numerous times for spalted woods for members,at no cost other than shipping.
I have sent out more DE blades to members than I can think of,OH, and shaving soap samples.

Until recently, I was unemployed two years and didn't mean to be critical of members going through a similar situation if that is driving their level of participation.
I was under the impression that you could only post classified ads if you had a certain level of participation on the forums, which would prevent any bland marketing by opportunists.

Hate to add fuel here but I sold Monty last week with the buyer using the Buy-It-Now feature and shortly afterward another member bought it as well. Had to disappoint the second buyer - I hate doing that. It's not a problem if you have some way to notify you immediately that gets your attention but I don't carry around my iPhone all day set to alert me when I get an email. The problem is that some aren't wired 24/7 like my teenagers. I may be a dinosaur with being wired up so I only check email once a day (if I have something listed) and about twice a week if I don't.
My suggestion - disable the Buy-It-Now feature (if the software give you that option) and revert back to emails to the seller until it's worked out. At least then as sellers we get the responsibility and opportunity to show it sold before someone else can jump in and buy. As buyers we can be sure it won't get pulled out from under us.
If the software won't allow you to disable the feature, just put something out telling everyone to not use it.
Have had the same issue twice in the past year (double sale) but I monitor my email all day.
Buy it now thru PP works fine for me, I just go to Classified and mark it as sold when notified by PP.
That's the problem I have - I can't monitor email that much. At best I can go into it 2 or 3 times a day. Last double sale the second guy bout it within an hour or two of the first - all between email checks. Guess I'll just not use the Buy-It-Now.
Any seller sets up or not the buy-it-now option when they create the ad.
The issue will be fixed when I get to it. It's not the highest priority on my TODO list.
If the classifieds are not working for somebody, not using them is a pretty simple option.
To anyone who isn't aware of it, gugi's TODO list involves maintaining pretty much anything on SRP that breaks or needs TLC. Pretty much the Lone Ranger in keeping the site running smoothly while also having the responsibilities outside of SRP that life carries with it.Quote:
