Sometimes I will use the site search for something that interests me. When I find a thread that is interesting to me and read through it, I want to comment... Until i notice that the last post was from (let's say for demonstration purposes) 2009. Is it frowned upon or not allowed to revive it because of how old it is? I don't want to be one of those guys digging up old threads if it is annoying to other people. What do you guys think about reviving an old thread? How long is too long?

Personally, I don't see a problem with reviving old threads - shows that you looked and want to add on to previous thoughts - better than starting a new one IMO....
I also think it is better then not searching at all and starting a new one if someone has already covered it. Funny picture though, made me laugh.Quote:

Or a new thread linking the old one in the OP, particularly if you have some new information that expands upon the old thread - one of the things that necroposting does is potentially screw up database searches based on date.
In the end it's a common sense call - historically SRP hasn't frowned upon the necropost too much so long as it is pertinent and useful. As said above, if the comment is basically inane then don't do it. Or, if the post is a question it would be perhaps better posed in a new thread, perhaps with the old thread that spawned your question linked, so that current members can give current information.

Just copy the thread link from your browser window and then paste it into your new post.
Alternatively, when you are posting look at the icons in the edit window - there is one there that looks like the planet earth with a chain in front of it. Click that and paste the original thread link in the popup box that appears.

I would avoid reviving an old thread if the subject is "Reviving Old Threads". I think that is likely to create a wormhole.
In order to link to your post I went to the upper right corner of the text box (#6) and right clicked. The drop down menu offered "copy link location", and I left clicked on that. BTW, on the issue of posting Zombie Threads ........ first time I saw people criticized for that I couldn't figure out why. Seemed to me that it was harmless, but I came to think that opening a new thread, and linking to the old one, is a better way to go. Matter of fact when I link to old threads I generally close the old ones before I post the link, because I can........ :shrug:

I think it's a little funny when I answer a new post posted to an old thread and then realise I've already posted. Then I wonder if the post I just posted contradicts what i posted before. Linking does seem to be a better idea, however, having said that, when someone revives one of my threads I'm actually quite chuffed...

If the subject of an old thread isn't dependent on a short-lived event, posting to it could make the thread even more interesting or instructive. Why put an artificial time limit on such a discussion? The beauty of electronic bulletin boards is that they so effectively span distance and time. Sort of like a good (paper) book.
