Right, point me to some that are 'larger than the standard'. If you click on the post number at the top right corner that is the link to that specific post - copy and paste it here and I'll tell you what is going on with it.
Most likely it is still hosted to a third party site, but it's just the image without a link to that site. But have to see the specific case to confirm.

What I did:
- Created a new folder "SRP" in a Google Drive
- Set the folder's permissions to "anyone with the link can view"
- Uploaded an image
- Got its shareable link
- Replaced everything but its actual ID with http://drive.google.com/uc?export=download&id=
- Et voilą...

The image dimensions are 3280px x 2460px and the file size is 977kB.
All of it is downloaded on my computer but then my browser renders it as 652px x489 px or in other words what ends up on my screen is 3.95% of the original image. The other 96% is thrown away by my browser.
If the image was uploaded to the SRP server it would've been reduced to 700px x 525px and the file size would be 88kB i.e. 95.5% of the original would be thrown out and only 4.55% kept.
Then my browser will download 88kB instead of 977kB and will reduce it to 87% for display. I'm not sure if rendering from 100% to 4% is more intensive than to 87% but it's not very important as the computer power is more than enough.
In both cases it will look exactly the same when all is done.
WIBNI if we could just embed Google Photos here? As in "the embed code provided by Google will actually work"? Because Google offers unlimited storage if you use reasonable sane photo sizes, as stated previously.
Personally I'd go the other direction - disable inlining from third party sites.
Then when you read old threads the images may be smaller than the ones from current threads but at least will be there.
The above image by RobinK is yooge on my computer. I don't want yooge, just a little bigger than small.
Using Picasa you can export choosing any image size you wish. If you export to your local Google Drive synchronisation folder, upload will happen unattendedly. Google Photos frankly is the best invention since sliced bread and bacon.
