Home page needs some touch up...

Just noticing that the last update to the home page, other than SOTD, was in March. What's up with that?? I don't want this to come across as being an A-hole, but things are kinda getting crusty and in need of some light polishing there. A small amount of neats foot oil, a little bit of hand sanding, new scales, a touch up on the hones......

I'm sure it's not always easy to keep the site updated, and maybe it's just everyone is busy outside of the site, but maybe it's time for something new on the front page. One of my thoughts was, wouldn't it be cool to see a big picture of a fancy new razor each week on the home page. A "Fancy razor of the week" kinda thing. Someone could be in charge of pulling, at random, an outstanding razor that has been posted, for all to see on the front page. I see amazing razors posted all the time that just kinda hide, buried in one of the sub threads. We're all razor enthusiast and need to see the porn!! :)

I don't know, maybe I'm out of place... Just trying to help keep things fresh.

I suppose I could, but I'm also very busy outside the forum and I'm not on as much as I use to be. New house, kids just had first day of school, and a bad case of la-zi-ness.... Someone who is on regularly could maybe volunteer, maybe a team of 2 or 3 for when one person can't...:shrug:

Hello mods. Are you there? The man made a suggestion. Has it fallen on blind eyes or are you all busy sprucing up the lame ass 4 o' clock dinner eatin', chesterfield sittin' on, polident usin' home page?

There are certain pages of the forum that can only be changed by a couple of individuals. Areas like the Wiki & making changes in threads themselves is a whole different animal; several members can do that.

I did too, at a time in my career I was tossed off the mid-night shift onto the day shift. I dreaded the change for about a week; then I realized that the women I met at 3 pm were a lot prettier & nicer than the women I met at 3 am.

If it ain't broke...Break it! I actually have a book with that title. It was given to me while I was in business. It's all about bringing about change and why change is a good thing. And contrary to popular belief, you can teach an old dog new tricks. I'm living proof of that statement.

Well, talking to the masses won't get anything done, I think.
One moderator has offered some insight. TBH, the home page is something I rarely even look at.

At any rate, things are running quite smoothly to me and I have no complaints from where I sit.
The forum is run by volunteer moderators for the most part. Some have disappeared while the remaining ones do a fine job as best they can, IMO. Perhaps a PM to the administrator or forum owners might stir up something, good or bad.

It's all here to enjoy. If you want more out of it, time to contribute more, I suppose?
Life gets in everyone's way at times and at those times, things must go on as best they can.

The only time I go to the Home Page is to see the Featured SOTD.

The current posts are continually updated as well as the SOTD.
The quality of the articles on the page have yet to be surpassed, IMO.

The home page is to interest passers-by, I am fairly certain.

Dude, everytime I dunked, things got worse. There is a thread.
Wot a pain...........Must be 1/8 inch of paint on that! I dried it for about 3 months and wet-sanded it with 1000 until it was pure satin. Blew 2 coats of clear on it! It worked! :p

Not my stuff...

The pics on the front page are very tiny.... This is a razor forum, there should be a big picture of an amazing razor up front. Like your Lancet grinds, or one of Andrews rare W&B, or Mikes Gilchrist, or one of Dave's Snail Forge, or Jamie's Flying Dragon, quad belly, lava forged, Mars Ore Japanese razors. Know what I mean???

Think Andrew just chose the first 3 months cover pages right there..

I hear ya, but to lure folks in with a slousand-dollar razzer won't be as effective as portraying a community in which to learn and start out slow and steady? Some may be intimidated by Mike's Gilchrist. ( I am!)

They are sitting and looking at a nice M Jung vintage.
Hoping to make it shave.

The forum should attract new guys, some with little knowledge, to perpetrate it'self.
I have seen so many come and grow in leaps/bounds in an amazingly fast period of time.
Teaching us older members lots of things!

So you might try to look at the front page in that manner. An introduction to the new/interested. I do.

Suppose you're right Tom..... The idea of the pics bounced into my head after thinking a few times that not much has changed on the front page. I don't know, maybe everyone's busy these days.

No doubt! The home page is quite a busy place, beginner's tips, recent posts, etc outlining the middle. TBH, My Featured SOTD aside (AHEM!) the featured SOTD is always front and center, showing common things as well as fancy ones.
I allow Max does a fine job there. Not so much room for the big pics, we must attract the historically inquisitive as we can?
Not certain there is a good solution, but younger, experienced fellows such as yourself are to be the elders soon.
Certainly change will come! :D

I visit on my phone, on tapa talk. Never see the home page. If doing a websearch and a newbie stumbles in they might.
I'd make the library and wiki and searches more prominent. I have a hard time getting there on my phone.

By the way maybe the Mods who aren't active any more should be replaced with a fellow who has more time, at least until they get life under control,, maybe a mod assistant.

The front page has changed in content with some new articles added. For now, until a new policy is implemented by the Administration, the main articles focus on straights, brushes, history and safety razors; this allows for easier updating from members contributions.

Keep in mind, front page content is not limited to the above four categories. It's just a bit easier to get the ball rolling this way. SRP members produce some great posts with content not often seen in other forums. Try to keep this thought in mind when you post; take some good photos and take more than one or two. We all love pics,,,:shrug:

For now, share your ideas here for the front page.

I was pleasently surprised when I noticed the front page looked a little different and read Zak's article on the Shiverring Beggar about Sheffield workshops. Good stuff.:tu
