I have never been able to enter that chat room. There seems to be some error when I click on the chatroom and I get redirected to a blank page.
Try going in through freenode. You can find the link here.
It may let you in that way.
Check the "Do I have Java" link on java.com: Java + You. How do I enable Java in my web browser? has instructions for enabling Java in your browser. And there is always the possibility of some "security" toy getting in your way, in which case you will have to find out how to enable Java for this site.

Robin helped me get Pidgin set up the other day. It was easy and works great - there are instructions in the wiki somewhere. I'm sure Robin can link you.
