Avatars Denied

I have been unable to load an avatar for many, MANY months now. I have tried dozens all small jpegs as well as linking to other images, but nothing works. I always get the same message:
"Unable to save image"
and at the top of the page it reads:
"Warning: fopen(./customavatars/avatar724_115.gif) [function.fopen]: failed to open stream: Permission denied in [path]/includes/class_dm_userpic.php on line 373"

I have brought the matter to David's attention, but I gather he's pretty busy. Can anybody HELP resolve this situation?

IMO the easiest thing to do is upload your avatar to photo bucket. Then direct link to it. That is typically what I do on forums.

Hi Xman. Sorry to hear about your problem. Instead of trying images found on the internet or this site; if you have a digital camera, you can take some of your own pics. Maybe be your razors or of yourself. Down load them into your computer, once they are there, you can choose the browes option on your avatar options. I can't promise this will work, but it's worth a try anyways. Good luck. STRAIGHT RAZOR 13.

I suspect that some permissions have been turned off for me or something, or perhaps there was a setting I had for my avatars which didn't translate when the site moved or was updated or something. I dunno. I'm not a tech wizard.

are you sure your image is small enough? also have you opened them in picture editor and saved them as "*.gif" instead of "*.jpg"

also is your browser and operating system up to date?

IIRC you are using a mac ...might i suggst you get a real 'puter? :D

That is weird. It should work. Could you give it a try from another computer (if you use a mac, could you try a pc?). That would give us an idea whether this is a problem with your user account, or with your browser.

I wondered if you'd already got loads of pictures or stuff filling your account but a quick look at your profile disabused me of this. Nothing much of use to say, sorry, but I recently uploaded an avatar from a Mac so it's probably not that. Try from a different browser perhaps?

Image Shack sorted me out when I had the same problem.

I had what I believe to be the same problem. I couldn't upload my picture. I tried using both internet explorer and mozilla to no avail.
Then I noticed that there was another place where you seemingly had the same function. Doing it through the options provided by the following links allowed me once again to upload my image( don't recall which one it was that worked).

Don't know if it's the same problem you encountered but it sounds a little bit like it. Also don't know if linking to usercp this way works but if not you can probably find them yourself.

you do have to resize the image down to an 150x100 or whatever the requirements are here. But photobucket will do that relatively easily. If you copy and past the direct link below the photo in photobucket to option one. It should work.

If you want pm me, and I'll resize the picture for you. And Put it in my photobucket, so all you have to do is copy and paste the link into option one.

I had the exact same issue complete with the same error messages (on my mac) at first but quickly realized it was, as others have suggested, a file size issue. After resizing in Photoshop, it went up, no sweat.

If it is a file size issue, I use Resize Images online and get it the exact size I want, for free, without having to load any software.

It is NOT a file size issue as the jpegs I am trying are 80 x 80 pixels and 4kb. I've done some net searches on my problem and it appears to be a permissions issue.

I'd say try it from someone else's computer then. I'm no IT guy, but that's helped me get around these annoying problems in the past.

You could find someone you trust on the board and have them do it for you. Might very well be what we in Danish call a Fejl40. Or as I've seen it described on the internet an ID 10 T error :w

Tried all that. Like I say, it's been like this for months now. Others on other bulletin boards have experienced the same issues from what I can gather and it has been the mods who solve it. I was just hoping somebody might have some concrete information from personal experience that might help David or whomever root it out.

76 X 56 is the size you want. 80 X 80 is on the edge of over size for Avatar's

Funny, never had that problem on a PC at all...And dang my computer works and is virus free, plus I didn't get fooled into paying 3 times as much for it.:mace:

Really don't mean to sound condescending but have you run Disc Utility & repaired 'permissions'.
Is it possible your avatar files are not Read & Write enabled ?
If you select the offending file & press 'Command i' you will see the permissions status at the bottom of the info window that opens up. If it says 'No access or Read Only you can change it to Read & Write.
This is really basic stuff so like I said, apologies if it sounds condescending. I always look for a simple fix.

I've passed this information to David with a request that he looks at it.

I'm happier for you than words can express, but my joy is somewhat stanched by my not now not ever being able to get into the Sunday chat room without the secret path that 6gun divulged, but which I forgot to file away for future use. :rant:

I can't remember what David said it was, but he purged all history of previous avatars (and there have been many) and I'm up and running again.

the only real shame is all the bellyaching was so that you could have a pornographic avatar. Sad days indeed.

I agree that there are better ways to start my day then by being greeted with homer simpson's ass. :)

xman's issue was related to an old avatar that he had being 'stuck' in the system.. Everyone else should be fine. And if not they should email me.

It was just the first of a few available avatars that I sent to David to work with. Don't worry. I'm sure the others will show up soon enough. :D
