When I reply to a thread or create a new one it seems that I have subscribed to it and when someone else replies I get notified via email. Is it possible to subscribe to a thread without being a part of it to be able to receive these notifications?

Go to user CP then edit options.

I went there but all I saw on subscriptions is this
Default Thread Subscription Mode
When you post a new thread, or reply to a topic, you can choose to automatically add that thread to your list of subscribed threads, with the option to receive email notification of new replies to that thread.
Default Thread Subscription Mode:
This has the options of
Do not subscribe
No email notification
Instant email notification
Daily email notification
Weekly email notification
This only has effect if you post a new thread or reply to one. If I'm interested in a thread but have nothing to contribute (which happens the majority of the time :) ) I still want to subscribe and be notified if other members give advice.
check the "thread tools" pull down at the top of the thread... there's a "subscribe to this thread" link in there.;)
