The Long Dark Night Is Over

Hola,

Sorry for the downtime yesterday. We had an emergency server move from one data center to another. As most of you know my business (ringfree.biz)(shameless plug) hosts SRP in our cabinets. Due to some contractual issues we've been doing an infrastructure migration over the past few weeks. And we thought we had a few more days to get SRP moved. Turns out we didn't.

So we did a furious un-racking of the server and drove it to a new data center in downtown Asheville, NC. The great folks at ERC Broadband (Welcome to ERC Broadband) were kind enough to provision a space for us as quickly as possible and make the IP assignments so that we could all get back to talking about our favorite hobby (And wallet drainer).

So that's the update. Welcome back :)

My dear David, thank you for your great work. For a while in my frustrating attempt yesterday to pull up SRP, my continuous fear struck me: that I had clicked the wrong key and blown up SRP. Oh, dear, dear. So now all is well and the world is happy and the silky faces are happy and the razors are being bought and sold — and now we can't wait for tomorrow morning so that we can shave again.

My first thoughts were that since 'thebigspendur' had obviously been working the grid again without flipping off the breaker and had turned off the SouthWestern United States - he'd taken a 'vacation' on short notice and offered to do some work East of the Mississippi...

For some reason I am receiving SRP perfectly on my iPad
and iPhone but am only getting a "cannot display" message
on my PC. In the house the iPad and iPhone run off the
PC router and all other links open on the PC Can someone help with some advice? Thanks.

See what happens when you open terminal (I think it's 'cmd' in the run program), and type

at least it's back...i just now got access again. it took my isp a while to update the dns entries.

I wasn't able to get on tonight when I got home from work until I went to Sham's forum and someone posted to put 72.27.226.90 in the address bar and that worked. Seems like it may take some time to get the glitches out.

I googled straight razor place and used a link that showed SRP classifieds, classifieds popped up and the forum link then worked.
This stuff is always a mystery to me.

Go to What Is My IP Address - Shows Your IP Address and email me you're IP address so that I can look through the logs. I've heard 1-2 other people complain about this. My email address is dave @ straightrazorplace . com

I've found it unstable since the move. Sometimes I can get on and sometimes I cannot. When I do get on sometimes I can post replies and not others. The site won't reload and times out. I found, thanks to Randy, that if I put 72.27.226.90 in the address bar I can get on when I can't from my bookmark.

Until all DNS servers you're using point to the right IP address there can be time outs. Using the IP address for the URL doesn't work well, it only gives you the first page, but afterwards you're in the same old situation.
An easy solution is to just switch to google's public DNS servers 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4

Your posts are all there, just the counter under your name is wrong, but that'll be fixed in few hours. There are no other casualties that I know of, the problem was with your new re-registration.

For 2 days I was unable to load the site after you were back up with either Googlechrome or Firefox. I cleared the cache, rebooted but to no avail. Suddenly today I could pull the site up again. Not sure why it's working now, but I'm glad. I missed you guys!

Also its cool to know that the servers are located only a couple hours from my house in Kernersville, NC!!!

It should be a mystery to most...

When things break or have to move,
one problem is that old info can be provided when a system looks up
the numeric address for a given name. The data
for this lookup has timers on it. The timers let
a nameserver cache the information for a specified
length of time. If something changes behind the curtain
the old answer is assumed to be correct which can
result in a bad answer for as long as it takes for the
timers to expire and the authoritative servers to be checked.
You can have a local cache on your laptop, phone, or iPad.
Your ISP can have their copy.... eventually it will tidy
up.

If you plan to move the timers are set to be a lot shorter than
normal. This outage was not "planned".

well it did me good to have srp down for 2 days i went out on a date friday and canned tomatoes saturday both were enjoyable one cost me much more lol.

Whew, the twitching and tremors have begun to subside. Developers, Administrators, Davenators, thanks for your work in restoring what has become a fun part of my life. I might have to buy a new razor just to celebrate. Say, is there a name for Cumulative Acquisition Disorders? :hmmm:

This recent outage or lack of razor and accessory fix has made it quite clear that whatever it is, I have it.
