I saw Cremo Shave Cream on the shelf at CVS a couple weeks ago. I'm pretty new to wet shaving (I'm using both DEs and straights at the moment, and still have a lot to learn with the straights) and am still experimenting with different soaps and creams, so when I Googled Cremo and found mostly good-to-excellent reviews, I decided to try it out. I bought a tube last night and shaved with it this morning, and I thought I'd throw in $0.02 for anyone who's interested.
The bottom line is that I'm impressed.
My shaves have improved a great deal since I started wet shaving, but there are a couple spots that have given me trouble for the past 25+ years, and continue to do so: the area immediately under the point of my chin, and a little patch under each corner of my mouth. Something about those areas has always required aggressive, ATG blade buffing to get a really close shave, and the price has always been irritation. I've never been able to get a shave in those spots that was both BBS and irritation-free, regardless of what razor or blade I used, or what kind of beard prep I did. Or at least I hadn't until this morning.
The only new addition in this morning's routine was that I massaged a dab of Cremo into my beard before I lathered up with Palmolive Sensitive, and a just tad more between the first and second passes. Cremo is advertised as being incredibly slick and protective of the skin, and the package claims that it dramatically reduces nicks and allows many people to shave ATG. So I went ahead and pushed for the closest shave I could, to really put it to the test. (For the record, I was using a '54 Gilette SS with a not-quite-new Feather Hi Stainless blade. I'm trying out my first package of Feather blades, and I have drawn plenty of blood with them.)
I ended up with a fantastic shave even in the problem spots, but the really good news arrived when I applied the alum block: I hardly felt a thing. I did have one small nick very low on my neck due to sheer stupidity, but no nicks, weepers or razor burn anywhere else. I spent most of my commute rubbing my face and grinning.
Of course one shave with a new cream doesn't necessarily prove anything. Maybe I just got lucky and had a really good day. All I can say for sure is that I used Cremo for the first time this morning, and I happen to have gotten one of the best shaves of my life. YMMV. (If my opinion changes with further experience, I'll come back and update.)
