Anyone else had this?

Just a quick one but I've only used creams since starting with straights last year. I'd never entertained soaps until my father in law and sister and law bought me C&E lime and MWF respectively for Christmas.

I know it's only a week but I shave daily and I've not used a cream. I've also just ordered C&E sandalwood (only £4.20 on C&E website with free uk delivery) and can't wait to try it in the old Wade mug the wife bought me.

The MWF is a permanent addition now, lathers up a storm and doesn't come off easily or dry out.

Such choice, what to do? Has anyone else gone through this?

Yes I have. I currently have five creams under the sink and a soap that I use on a regular basis love to mix it up and have variety.

I have about 20 creams and soaps from all corners of the world, from very inexpensive to very expensive. I don't rotate my soaps and creams, or for that matter my razors, instead I just pick the combo that feels right on that specific day. In other words, I know what you mean!

The soaps I have far out number the creams but I do eventually use them all in a haphazard rotation of over 30. I think you are well on your way to a SAD and to help it along may I suggest you try a Palmolive shave stick at your earliest possible convenience. You really do need to have tried at least one shave stick too.

I'm finding I prefer soaps for a DE shave and creams for the straights. Not sure why. I may go a little bonkers this weekend if the C&E SANDALWOOD soap arrives and give that a spin with a straight.

My father in law swears by Palmolive sticks. I've bought him C&E soap, Vergulde Hande etc and he uses them once and back to Palmolive he goes. My grandad uses it too as well as Ingrams which I also like to use. See if I can pilfer some :)

Now, to really mix things up and confuse you some more how about trying some uber-lather. You will have to get some Glycerin from your local CVS, Walgreens, etc. and watch some videos on how to make it. Great stuff but I would wait until I'm a little more familiar with making regular lather. On the other hand, if you like to experiment.....go for it!

Oh yea, you can mix your soaps with your creams too, there are videos on that subject too. Remember, this is a sport that involves a lot of experimentation so if you feel like experimenting.........

My modest collection.

Left to right we have Trumpers Lime cream, C&E Lime cream, C&E Lime soap, MWF, Macca Root Cream, Real Shaving Co. Cream (recycled Macca root pot as I don't like tubes), Groomed Cream (nice sandalwood smell), Ingrams with menthol (in Tupperware for the same reason) and truefitt & Hill No.10. Spare C&E lime cake under the sink along with spare MWF and a vergulder hand cake. C&E sandalwood cake on the way and just bought a Palmolive stick on the advice of BobH.

Stopping is not an option. Variety is the (Old) Spice of Life. Frothing in the mouth is not good but frothing of the face is to be desired and can only be achieved with a vast array of scents and foaming abilities combined and re combined over the years as you develop and redevelop many uber lathers. I really can't help myself. We've got a dept store (John Lewis) not far away with a host of TOBS creams, Truefitt & Hill, Kent brushes. A L'Occitaine on the door step along with a Crabtree & Evelyn.

That with Asda carrying the groomed cream and balm at very reasonable prices along with the personna blades and a Palmolive stick for 49p. Oh and a bottle of old spice original for £4.50 :)

That will be it for a short while though. I need the Wade and Butcher sorted along with the Joseph Rodgers from yesterday and then the bairn arrives soon.

I'll be keeping the eyes open for bargains though!

Yup...having realized I've suffered SAD longer than I thought, I now pick three soaps for the week and leave them on the sink area and store the rest away. After that week, pick three more...etc...

Hahaha...I'm flexible....been known to change my mind and reach for something else...that Red Proraso sandalwood has a great hold on me...for $10, you just can't beat the overall shave, and the Red, just fantastic feel, smell, lather, everything....the Proraso Blue in the tube is also really nice. It's like you get the DR Harris and Tabac and MWF, and they have a level all their own, and then there's Proraso, just out there, always getting the job done nicely...haha!

Bob, the Palmolive. Scraped over wet stubble and face lathered with a wet brush (grandad's way apparently).

Glad to hear I did not lead you astray on the Palmolive stick, your grandad knows a thing or two doesn't he. Shaved with it this morning too and as always was pleased with it's performance. It just proves that you don't have spend a ton of shekels to get a very good lathering soap. Next time I am over to the UK I am putting a dozen sticks in my bag to take home for sure. Smells pretty good too.

I scrape over the stubble too and I also choke the knot bristles/hair between thumb and fore finger and rub the stick in it too, then lather. I like to overdose on lather.

When I called him and asked he said "you used to stand and watch me do it when you stayed. Can't you remember?" Scoffed when I told him about all the soaps and creams. A little too decedent for an old geordie's tastes :D he did say he once used a wilkinson sword stick lol

Lathers like mad. I'm very happy with it and smells a bit spicy.

Your grandad sounds like my German grandad who used to smoke cigars and put the stub in a pipe to finish it off. Much to be said for being thrifty, waste not want not.

The way I look at it is that he is happy with his set up "What you got a bowl for?"

I'm still trying as I grew up with "the best a man can get" when it was the polar opposite so I'm still trying to find what I'm happy with.

He's got the same razor he's always had and uses the same blades, soap and brush as far as I know. I'm not sure that'll ever be me but I may find a combination or combinations I like and stick with.

To call my grandad thrifty is the same as saying da Vinci was an alright painter lol

Irreverence aside, I love him dearly and wouldn't change him. My son is to be named for him :)

You know there is something in using the same gear everyday, you get to know it intimately. They used to say, beware the man with one gun, he probably knows how to use it, when I was shooting as a hobby. I have seen a couple of these type of guys spank the pants off guys with a fancy arsenal of guns to choose from.

Different times breed different different individuals/generations. I think we are pretty spoilt by the relative affluence we live in today. Enjoy it while it lasts.

I try not to get too caught up in it as it's a fairly recent thing for me, disposable income that is. Growing up in Newcastle in the 80's and 90's few had a lot. I may take the mick out of my grandad but I wish I had half the discipline he has with money. Only half though :)

And just like that a pot (ex tester, never opened and gratis :) ) and a tube of C&E sandalwood cream added to my collection too. That really is me for a while now. I've got enough soap and cream to keep a grizzly bald for a year!
