Hey all,
Rookie here and I just got my G20 scuttle a few weeks ago. I notice the cella doesn't do too well with steaming hot faucet water. Being that it's a high of around 4degrees here lately id like to find some soaps that perform well as a hot lather.

Your soap would go in a separate container/dish. I use little pyrex dishes that I will either press, or grate the soap into.
The bowl portion of the scuttle would be where you make your lather. The hot water inside would be to keep the lather in the bowl warm. If you keep your soap in there, it would be more difficult (if not impossible) to get the right water to soap ratio.
Another point I should mention is that some say too hot of water inside their scuttle has made their lather dry out faster. If this happens, not you'll have an idea as to why....

Hahaha....yes, or you could do what I did when I first got my scuttle...couldn't quite figure out where my soap puck went? On top of the lid with the little holes in it? Or in the bowl itself? Yes, that had to be it!! So filled the scuttle with boiling water straight from the kettle, put the Col Conk Amber soap puck in the scuttle with a little bit of water and hopped in the shower.Quote:

I have a classic edge skuttle and find that the cln conk pucks, as well as the Edwin Jagger pucks sit well in the lid.
As far as which soaps I find lather really well in the skuttle itself, The above listed as well as Crabtree/Evelyn Work well if you work the moistened brush in the puck a good 30 seconds then move to the skuttle and add a little water to the brush as you mix, as required.
Creams such as Cyril Salter, Real Shaving Company, or Proraso applied about almond size again to the pre soaked brush than worked to foam in the skuttle bowl work awesome too.
My routine is close the sink drain, fill the sink and skuttle outer chamber at the same time with hot water but leave the mixing bowl dry ish, then I soak my brush in the spout of the skuttle a few minutes and use it to collect the soap from the puck or tube and transfer it to the skuttle which I then take out of the sink to use as I mix up the lather. Use the half full sink for blade rinse between strokes as I shave.

To my knowledge, there aren't specific soaps that are best suited for scuttles, as a scuttle's only function is to keep your lather warm. It's essentially a lather bowl inside a bowl of hot water. Think double boiler, but without boiling water. If your water is too hot, it will make your lather quickly dry out. Perhaps this is what you're experiencing?
I wouldn't really put a puck of soap on the lid either, seems pointless to me...also seems like a pain in the butt having your soap sit on a plate instead of having it in a dish, but that's just my opinion I suppose.
Perhaps your issue is with loading? I've read your posts and tried to walk myself through what you might be doing, but I still can only guess what your issue is, specifically.
Hey guys, I think people are talking about two different types of scuttles here. The OP has a scuttle that is the double boiler type, not the old fashioned type where you put the puck on top and dip you brush in the spout affair.
I think that the water is just too hot and breaking down the lather in the bowl. Lower the water temp in the G20 a bit and see how it goes.

When I use my scuttle, the lather from my MWF comes out kinda thin and watery. I apply it and work it to my face, and as it cools, it tightens up into a great thick, slick lather.
You could try slightly cooler water, or as Siguy says try adding ingredients to make an "uberlather" (geez I hate that word), the basic ingredients being shaving soap, shhaving cream and glycerin (also called glycerol) though I like to add some vitamin e based moisturising cream or Nivea sensitive, I also cold water lathered this too.
Recently though I got given a jar of Martin De Candre which performs very nicely in it's own right, and likes warm/hot water.
I suggest viewing the classic youtube Chimensch 30th Anniversary shaving video to watch how to use a scuttle (and SR shave).
Fill the scuttle with hot water, let it warm, drain and refill only the water reservoir with hot water.
Soak your brush in hot water.
Your soap should be in a mug, or other container. A cream from a tube is added to the brush or scuttle.
Load your brush with soap, then whip up lather in the scuttle. Do not be hesitant to dip your brush tips in water and rehydrate as and when needed.
The hotter the water, the faster the lather dries and the more often rehydration is needed. When done shaving, rinse the lather from the scuttle.
Water temp regulates drying speed. Uberlather dries more slowly. The scuttle can be left empty of water and used like a bowl for unheated lather in hot seasons.

That's exactly how I use my scuttle, when I use it. Ryan82 got me into using it again, the warm lather is really, really nice. I've never had a problem with using it. Either squirt a bunch of cream in, wet the brush and stir it up. If' I use a puck type soap, same as you, load the brush up, dash of water in the scuttle, and swirl away!Quote:

This is exactly the process I've been following (which I saw on one of Lynn's lathering videos) except for filling the sink to clean the razor for fear of chipping the blade. With that said, I have Col.Conk soap and the Cella Cream/soap in the red container. When using hot water (only from the sink) both soaps whipped up a nice lather but evaporated very quickly compared to the others. I'll try using a slightly lower temp and see if that helps.Quote:

I'd get a TOBS cream over their soaps, never tried mama bear but it's supposed to be pretty good, and glycerin based like conk IIRC. Never heard of stirling but MWF is always a good buy. Razorock....I tried one recently, the bergamot and neroli, it has a nice scent but the lather isn't the best...doesn't have a lot of glide.Quote:

Never thought I would give up my scuttle. Got divorced, moved to an apartment, didn't bring the scuttle. Started face lathering. Got better lather than ever before. Never looked back. YMMV, but give it a try
I've used all my soaps and creams in my scuttles several times and have yet to find one that didn't perform. I think the key is not to use boiling water. Hot tap water is good enough, though I realize that not all home water heaters are created equal.
Within the last few months I read somewhere that MWF likes lower temperatures so I tried it with warm (as opposed to hot) water in my G20 and had excellent results. I was had successful results using hot water too but IMO lowering the temp made a noticeable difference. Just something to keep in mind.
