Hey guys, just got all my goodies from larry. I got a sample pack of puck soaps (bald frog, strop shoppe, and mitchells wool fat) and one of them says to shave or grate off a little bit, pancake it and put in a bowl or mug, wondering if that is way to go with sample soaps, or just build lather in the bowl with the whole puck in there?

Just shove the sample in a bowl and build the lather from there, rinse the sample after your shave with cold water, leave to air dry.Quote:

Put it in a bowl; you can get little noodle bowls from Asian stores for a couple of bucks. After the first or second use the sample will have stuck to the bottom of the bowl (hopefully) so it doesn't move around as you load your brush.
Ah, I remember those instructions - that was on the sample wedge of MWF.
The reason he suggests grating it, then pressing the gratings into a pancake in the bottom of the mug, is to provide more surface area for the brush to come in contact with so it will better and quicker.
If the other samples are already 'flat' and offer decent size surface area to load from you can just drop 'em in the mug and go town. It wouldn't hurt to grate them and press the down to create even more surface area. But, if they're already 2" or 3" in diameter it probably isn't worth the extra effort...
I have always just loaded them holding them in my hand. I am then able to wipe the lather that formed in my hand on my face prior to face lathering. But that is what works for me as always YMMV
yea, those were the instructions on the MWF, the others are sample size, i'd say 1"1/2 type size, maybe 2" diameter...but sounds like i don't have to worry to much if i rinse and dry the soap after use so thats good! also gonna go grab some wilkinson, williams and proraso shave soaps just to see...who knows...always nice to have some variety for sure!
