Two creme questions (one of which isn't a dumb one)

After many years as a soap man, I found two tubes of Crabtree and Evelyn creme in a drawer. I now prefer creme over soaps. My two questions:

Cremes range in price from very expensive to very inexpensive. Where would you say the sweet spot is where you begin to get diminishing returns for your dollar--any recommendations for good but not über expensive cremes?

Second--the one that will convince you that I'm an idiot--if your creme is in a tub, not a tube, do you simply scoop out a dollop with your finger?

Second question- scoop...and I think sometimes a tub of , say RazorRock is called a croap
Not sure about the first, lots of good creams for cheap. Proraso, my favorite is Real shaving AKA RS CO..

I have cremes in a tub and I just dab the brush in a little.

As my friend Major has said, I also just touch the tip of the brush in the container. I don't know about his other container but the one I sent him isn't all that wide but it doesn't matter as you aren't 'swirling' the brush in there, you are more or less 'dipping' it, with that said you may need to twirl the brush a little to load it.

If you would like a recommendation to a soap that I really like and is made by a cottage industry PM me and I'll send you some info.

Maca Root shave cream from The Body Shop is very good and not too expensive. If you have a store near you I think they will even give you a sample to try first. Kiss My Face is another good one at a reasonable price. Don't forget Speick and Musgo Real too.

Trufitt and Hill Excellent but twice as much

You don't need a ton on your brush to make monsterous lather. Just dip the tips. If I enjoy the scent and the cream lathers well then I paid for the price of quality. At my current purchase to use rate I have a five to six year supply of creams and soaps.

At least I think I found my favorites if Obie would just lay off the suggestions for a while...

Personally, I think that if you are new(ish) go with the Truefitt and Hill cream... It's great stuff (I love the ultimate comfort), and if you work on your lather and use a razor (cartridge even) to learn how to make a good lather, then at least you can remove that variable from the equation when determining a quality of a shave etc.

Once you can get consistent shaves, then move on and experiment with cheaper creams to see how you like them, and then something like MDC (Martin de Candre) to see if you appreciate or benefit from the more expensive creams available. When I first started I didn't really like the TOBS cream I had, however now I'm better at shaving and lathering, I find the TOBS 90% that of Truefitt, yet half the price... in saying that though, I wouldn't replace the TOBS, I'd stick with Truefitt or try MDC... Boiled down, per shave, it's pretty cheap whatever cream you use on a per shave basis... and for me this is a hobby - an enjoyable one, so Im not going to stress about 20c vs 30, 40 or 50c per shave.
