Gentlemen,
I opened up the Third Tier category rather than dismiss it, because I felt it would help our members more.
I used this for several shaves and it burned my skin so badly that I looked like a bloody lobster. Some nasty stuff, this, even though it has some fans. Several days after I got rid of it, a friend telephoned me from Chicago and complained about the same problem with this soap. He said he looked like a lobster, too. Also, he said the lid did not fit properly on the fancy dish.
Saponificio Varesino 70th is great if you like Aqua Di Gio, If you got stunk out of the bar in your 20s by this smell, I would understand. I know of people who hate lavender, and fougere , So that rules out MdC. SV with the After Shave I got a great face feel.
Cold River Soap Works IMO is a second tier soap. If they can figure out their scents a bit then they may even get in the first tier for me.
Wow that is a heck of a reaction to it. I have not experienced that nor have I heard complaints of that nature from 2 other forum members I know use the soap. As always there is no telling how a soap will react with someone's skin till they use it. The cost of the soap is not any indicator either if you will have a reaction to it. Probably why getting samples are a good idea.
Bob
Just found a deal on Tabac that I posted in the soap thread. Never used it before and it is in the second tier. Hopefully it's a decent soap. Seems to get good reviews.
This is a cool thread as I haven't invested much time or money in soaps. Been using primarily VDH which is great for the price and I find it locally. L'Occitane was the first quality soap I received and it's awesome so been thinking about aquiring some good stuff and with all the quality stuff in the 2 tiers I should have plenty of great choices!
Thanks for the cool thread Obie! And my wallet may hate you! :)
Thanks to a great member here(Bob). I will have the Panama boellis to try , I will give my take on it , I do not have sensitive skin so maybe it will work out for me, I,m not Obie but I'll give my thoughts. Tc
I agree that Obie's post should be made a stickie.
So much hype swirls around soaps and creams ... that is why I've got so much here to be used up. I read a gushing review, foolishly buy it, only to find it's hust so-so, or abject junk! As I read more and more about these new "wonder soaps," I keep referring back here to get the truth .. Invaluable to me.
Now, I remember one cream that performed beautifully, and would easily make second tier. The creams that came in a tube from "The Real Shaving Company" performed flawlessly for me. The scent a little "off beat," but nice. They also had a Professional formula that came in a tub. The cream was gold colored .. just great stuff!
BTW, how can I donate a couple packages of assorted used soaps on the site? Is it frowned upon?

Samples are loved. pick members at random an send them a prize.
And or send them to Bill the give away guy here at SRP. He handles the monthly giveaway, Soap is always needed

Again, all such giveaways are best handled through a personal message.
As for sending prizes to Bill, please send him a personal message and inquire about his interest.
These just arrived! :)Attachment 226886 After some use I'll form an opinion about which tier they fall in.
If you like soaps I am sure you will enjoy LPL soap. Pacified my SAD today with one more T1. Will put it to the test tomorrow Attachment 226906
Ok. Tried the Le Père Lucien Rose de Pushkar this morning. The lather seemed like a liquid pillow! Very nice, first tier worthy imo. The scent is very interesting too. Rose, cinnamon and something maybe herbaceous. Not your standard 'rose' scent. Good stuff!
I agree it is good stuff
So Obie, What is your opinion on the Original P160??
Found someone with a kilo of it, that was cyrogenically sealed.
Ultrasound,
I never tried the P160. I don't fancy shave creams and soaps with the almond scent, and that's probably why I never tried it.
Antica Barbieria Cola, in the Second Tier, is also almond scented, although with mild bitter almond, and after using it a few times, I passed it on to a friend.
First tier for me are
Tabac
MonSavon
Haslinger
Barbus
Pitralon
Lea Professional
Castle Forbes
Savon Des Volcanes (sic)
Everything else is a distant second and used for a change of pace
I like those nice, I like Castle Forbes, Tabac, Xpec, LPL, Razorock (Tallow formula), MDC, TH 1805,GFT EURIS,and Windsor, Arlington, Baume.Be.
Others may not like ok course what works for me may not work for others, like your top tier I wanted to try those
I like Xpec and go along with Obie that it is T1. At the same time I think some of the other choices I like better. Mlucassr I would agree with your choice except for Tabac I just don't get on with it, I will keep trying it a few more times as my taste may change but right now I don't care for it. I think I will stick to only buying Obie's choice of T1 (4 to go) and just use those in my rotation. (New years resolution to stop wasting money on T2 & 3s) 😊
After perusing this awesome thread and the fantastic Perfumania sale I purchased a tub and refill puck. Have used to a few times and gotta say I love it!!!
Lathers easily and profusely, nice slick and cushioned shave and I absolutely love the scent!!
But what do I know, I also love Clubman, Old spice, Aqua Velva and all the other so called " old dude " scents.
P.S. I'm 63! Does that make me eligible for " old dude " status?! :D
I like Obie's choices as well
He is great, love the Vet's, the only one I was on the fence with was Alvarez Gomez I can take it or leave it all others are great, to me others have different feelings, the joys of preference, but I get that Bro.
What did you purchase
Thank you Obie for this thread!! I already and both MDC's, but on your recommendations I ordered D.R. Harris Windsor, and Arlington, Penhaligon's Sartorial, and Le Per Lucien.
I just shaved with the Windsor, and I love the scent, glide and cushion. Great soap!!! Thanks again Obie.
What Obie is afraid to say is he just regenerates like a timelord. Once he hits that magic age....well you know.
What I am really curious about does there exist one soap that everyone will agree is a tier one and I mean everyone???

No , can't get everyone to try everything to come to a conclusion, but I think there is a soap out there that "just about" everyone would like if tryed, but not going to happen. Tc
I've never heard anybody say anything negative about Martin de Candre.
Spendur, my friend, no regeneration. None of that. The Universe fills me with its magic continuously — and I stay at 27.
I think the one cream candidate for your questions on which most agree has to be Castle Forbes. I don't think I've every heard anyone complain about it, or denigrate it. Of course, Castle Forbes is in my Tier One.
Well I don't know about that. back in 410 BC when cousin Alaric sacked Rome we couldn't find Julius Caesar's shaving brush and straight and I thought I saw this strange figure with a big sack walking out of the palace humming something in Assyrian.
I agree , Castle Forbes and MDC usually don't get bad reviews only complaints on price, but then again price is something that is up to who is buying. These two products are TOP TIER. Performers, Tc
