:( I bought a cake of the Bay Rum soap from Classic Shaving and was dissapointed with it . It smells good , but it dries out too fast on my face , and burns my skin . Have any of you guys tried it , and gotten the same results ? Or is it just me ? I'm going back to using the soap I was getting at Wallgreen's .
I've never been impressed with the Classic soaps (or any glycerine soaps), but some guys like them. You might want to buy a puck of "Rivivage" (aka Gold-Dachs Spezial) or Truefitt & Hill soap from Classic - these are both really outstanding soaps. The T&H soap is widely reckoned as one of the top two or three shaving soaps available, and the Spezial is also highly regarded.
I tend to stay away from some soapmakers unless I've heard enough good reviews to make the financial commitment. With me, it is a commitment because I never get just one. Case in point, I have 6 soaps coming from TGQ for my first experience. I can't wait!!!

I believe the answer is to brush more soap into your brush. I too found the lather dissapating a few months ago. /then I realized that Classic soap produces billowing foam. Expect fatter thick lather than many others. It ispretty good. It just acts different than most. Increase the soap and wisking more than your instinct says.

I didn't have any problem with the lather, but it gave me a burning sensation also.
I didn't get a burning sensation, but it did dry out way too quickly for my taste. Got really "gummy".

Look in the vender room for "Colleen's Soap" She makes the stuff and I think she puts stuff that addicts people to it :p Really it's the best stuff I have tried, not that I have tried many but it is still tops.

I have used classic shavings soap and had no problem at all. although I do love soap from tgq and mama bears soaps.
Well , judging from the responses , I think the CS soap just doesn't agree my skin . I shaved with it , 3 or 4 times and it was irritating my face so bad , I threw it away and went back to the soap I was using , before . :shrug:
I have used 3 different Classic soaps and the least favorite was Sandalwood (I liked the fragrance but the lather was very light and billowy, not good lather) I like their Coconut Lime pretty well but have come to the conclusion that their lather leaves a lot to be desired (slight burning sensation and they have a short life, too). I have heard nice things about Mama Bears - I hope they're right, I have my first order coming soon!
I believe their soaps are very good but decieving when building the lather. I believe they have a higher amount of lather producing agents than usual.
I find you get plenty of volume at first causing most to stop whisking on the soap. When this premature decision to stop whisking on the soap probably causes people to think the proper amount of soap is in the brush. Keep whisking.
I started a thread a couple of months back on this. Since the input I realized that thr soap ratio needed to be increased.
Please give it a whirl w extra whisking on the soap prior to final judgement. I almost sold this short. I'm glad I didn't as it is now one of my favorite brands.
Ray DuPont would never knowingly sponsor a sub standard product.
Another point made regarding the bay rum scent burning. A member posted a year or two ago that the properties of Bay Rum can be very irritating agent on the skin.

I get great lather with classic soaps, I find them to be very good. The first soap I used was classic and it did take me a long time to get these results, I feel that I was better off starting with classic as I learnt how to lather with them. Had I come to them aafter using another product i would probably not have been as impressed as I am now.

Just tried my first shave with Classic brand shaving soap (almond). I didn't have any problem at all. Perhaps I used a little more water and whipped it more with the brush, but the smell and lather were wonderful.
I will not hesitate to order more.

Thanks for all the replies . I've gone back to the soap I get from Wallgreen's for now . It works well for me and the price is right , although the price of soap (within reason) is not an issue . Unfortunetly , the CS bay rum soap was tearing my face up .

I've been using Classic Lavender, 3 inch. I'm only halfway through my second bar since I started using a straight razor around two months ago. No skin irritation (I tend to have sensitive skin, razor burn yes, soap burning, no). :shrug:
Oh, so many variables to find and sort out shaving this way. In the last month, especially the last few weeks, I've been working on what 'type' of lather I like and how to produce it with this soap. Thick and foamy tends to be drier, evaporates faster, and tends to be 'gummier' and sometimes harder to shave with. Wetter, slightly thinner lather, tends to shave smoother and doesn't fade away as fast. Heck, I just ordered 5 more bars. :eek:
I should probably expand my soap horizons. Later though, as I'm still tweaking actual shaving techniques, especially the sides of the neck. I also am playing with different variations of having an extended goatee, slowly morphing it with different cutting styles and strokes and having to wait for the hair to grow with each shape. So, for now I'll stick with Classic (for at least 5 more bars.). :tu
The Classic Shaving Bay Rum soap is the first soap i used when i switched to a DE. I had no problem whisking up great lather using my pure badger brush.
