I was reading Legman's thread about what if you couldn't buy MdC or CF what would be you favorite choice
That got me thinking, "What if you couldn't order it and had to buy local"
I would only have 4 choices
Williams
Van der Hagen
Kiss my Face
Maca Root from The Body Shop
Out of those 4 only the VdH really doesn't perform at all for me
What about you ???

The Proraso line is sold in most local drug stores here. I started with the green and the red and have been quite happy with them. I could be satisfied using them every day if I had to.
I have a 10-year old tub of Williams and 2 Wilkinson brushes that are even older. They were bought at the local drug store. I still occasionally use the Williams to lather a barber hone or my coticule for a razor refresh, but I don’t shave with it.
I would travel by mule ,on foot, crawl over the deserts and swim the ocean, and get my MDC. or use ivory soap Tc
Fairly similar limited choices locally also.

For me Williams is a no go. The other 4 will do just fine with Maca Root at the head of the pack for me.

What's that old saying "Necessity is the mother of invention". I'd make my own soap.
First choice: I'm with bigspender. I'd make my own.
Second choice:I'd probably fight the SoCal traffic and make an annual trip to The Art of shaving. There's one about 20 miles from the house. Not too impressed with them, but I'd give it a go "if"...

For an OTC product, Palmolive isn't too bad.
For an artisan product, I love Al's.
I would have to travel great distances to get any of those, except ivory bar soap. It would be like before I discovered on line wet shaving stores and I would have to stock up when I went to Canada. I used to get tubs of Proraso when I was in Prince Rupert but the Shoppers Drug Mart does not stock it anymore and what they do stock is worse than ivory. I’m in a pickle unless I get to Vancouver or Victoria or Prince George.
Well thats a damn good question. Ive never even looked at the drug store. I know i seen vanderhagen at wally world. Wow, i think id grow a beard first.
Williams, VDH deluxe and luxury are the only thing I can find here locally. Once in awhile I can find Proraso. I really like the VDH luxury, but I don't like the deluxe. Williams isn't bad, but it can be quite finicky. We had a small shop here for awhile that sold a few others, but it didn't take and ended up closing down.
I would prefer AoS cream is prevalent in Vancouver, so I would get all of the different scents they have.
I can easily get Proraso, but I just don't enjoy it as well as the scents.
Having said this, if this hypothetical situation were to occur, I would learn to make my own soap. :)
AoS for me in Knoxville, they also carry some Penhaligons products. There's also a Sephora that carries some l'Occitane products in the same mall. Now if Sephora could just swing a deal to carry Dior shaving cream and ASB ...

When it comes to stuff that I can get from retailers I have the rather regular options of:
VDH
Creamo
Art of Shaving
Whatever the repackaged Proraso is called that Bath and Bodyworks sells.
I'm not a huge fan of any of these but I'm lucky enough to have Sudsy Soapery and Chatillon Lux in the area and would likely be using nothing but those products.
So my local shave shop has them all. So I would never be without a good variety. They are about twenty minutes drive. They make their own so truly local is Esbjerg so you know I would be in such a terrible plight...of too many choices still.
A mall a few miles from me has an AOS store, Bath&BodyWorks, L'Occitane, and Crabtree & Evelyn, and local pharmacies have Pré de Provence.
It all depends on how you define "local". I live in the suburbs of Chicago. I have an AOS store about 20 miles away and Mertz Apothacary/Q Brothers/Smallflower is about 40 miles away. Furthermore, Oleo Soapworks is in Chicago. And for brushes, TurnNShave is located in Chicago as well. There is even a Truefitt & Hill store in the Chicago Loop.
However, I have yet to visit either of these locations. I prefer to order online and avoid the Chicago traffic.
We have an Art of Shaving here in Nashville. There is also a local artisan, Music City Suds. Their shaving soap base is very good. Some of their scents aren't for me. I've heard that Nivea is pretty good and have seen that here.
Van der Hagen and C.O. Bigelow (Poraso) by Bath and Body Works. Both work well for me and I like them.
An odd name, but from my home state of New South Wales I enjoy using Whispers From The Woods. Really good stuff.
In my area it would be VDH, Williams, or JM Fraser’s. I have tried some of the local artisans but they are all hand soap in puck form. I get good shaves from the prior 3 mentioned so I would be OK.
I live in Vancouver, BC, and I believe Soapy Bathman is in an adjacent city, around 20 minutes away. This would be the 'local' soap I would use if I had to. Unfortunately, I have never tried it as they don't sell samples.
At the drug store here it’s Williams, Vanderhagen, Maybe a tube of Palmolive cream or Nivea Gel
