Alternative Soap containers

Howdy gentlemen!

Being a very frugal person and super picky I have dealing with an issue of absolutely minimal importance. Empty soap containers for refill pucks like Tabac or DR Harris. Yes, I could buy the ones offered, but the mark up is silly. I could buy old spice mugs, but I want a lid. Plastic is a no go, too light and I don't like the sharpish edge that rubs on the brush as you load. Pyrex is the next logical choice, but I not a huge fan...

So, what do I do. I love the glass containers of MdC; seals well, hefty and it isn't plastic. So, peel back an MdC label find the manufacturer, based in France with an exorbitant minimum order quantity (a couple hundred is too many, for me at least). Other sellers have some 200ml glass jars, yet minimum quantity of 24 is still a bit ridiculous. Roughly 7 bucks each with shipping and lids.

I decided to give the problem to my father as a gift request for Christmas. Couple days later I get a text, "what do you feel about candy dishes?"

I got 4 of them for Christmas, and though they won't really *seal* like MdC, they hit all the other buttons. I'll post some pics after work, but my SOTD has the one my Tabac resides in.

Now, what to put in the other 3? And what are some alternative containers you like to use?

I like to use Pyrex glass containers for shave soaps. Unfortunately I have forgotten the size.

I think Bob and I are both using these little glass dishes. I get mine in multi packs from Canadian Tire or any other big box store when I go to Canada. I think they are around $1.50 each when purchased in the eight packs.

Oh, they are about one cup.

I have been using this art deco dish from a ladies dresser set that i found at a antique store. The fabric on the top isn't exactly masculine and i could replace it with wood or leather if i wanted to. Actually matches a hand mirror and brush that my Mom had when i was a kid so i've left it as is. the lid doesn't seal tight but it's a good enough fit.

Yes we are. I should add Anchor Hocking has similar ones but I like the Pyrex ones better.

I use empty mothers polish containers. wash them good, remove label and put label from soap on lid for identification.

I really like the PETG Soap Jars from Maggard's, they are very well made, are flatter than most containers, and stack very well. They also sell a nice Black Plastic 5 oz. soap container, if cost is an issue.

I found these at a locwl store. I just dont like that the soap is under the edge/rim of the glass...

Check The Container Store, and Container and Packaging, online, they have everything. They have PET jars similar to the new MDC jars for as low as 63 cents.

I too like the Pyrex and Wide mouth mini Ball Jars.

Close out stores like Home Goods, TJ Max and Ross usually have small canning and storage jars. Hobby Lobby has a good selection of canning and craft jars.

You also might look at Japanese covered ceramic rice bowls. Here in California there are a bunch of Japanese discount stores, like Muji and Daiso. They sell a wide assortment of beautiful ceramic and plastic covered bowls, they make great shaving bowls floating in a sink of hot water to heat your lather. Some have textured insides. They sell for as little as dollar. Pretty sure they do online.

I really don’t care for glass that much since dropping a glass MdC jar on a tile bathroom floor. If you’re in bare feet your first problem is how to get out of the bathroom.

Except for not being classy, the Maggards PETG Colt jar is just hard to beat. It’s good quality, large and shallow enough to accommodate large brushes and can hold quite a bit of soap. +1 Richard.

Ceramic would work, if you break it, you don’t get the fine razor sharp glass shards. Look for old Nuavia coffrets.

I steal the salsa bowls from Mexican restaurant and a hand full of coasters from the bar to cover the soap in them. .0 cost

Here's 3 of the 4, didn't bother taking a photo of the 4th as it smells weird and I'm not sure if I can clean it enough to be comfortable to use. Seems like a slightly porous potpourri container...

The 2 clear ones are obviously larger, so my plan is to grate/mash something into them. What that soap should be.... hmmmm

The white one is probably a rice container like what Euclid mentoned. Fits the tabac well, but is quite smooth on the bottom, we'll see how well it sticks to it. Might have to grate it into the bowl.

In an ideal word, someone would sell lids for old spice mugs. I have my DR Harris puck in there and they fit perfect. But since I can go weeks or monthsbetween soaps, it sits in a ziploc bag to prevent a dust layer forming and that drives me bonkers.

Might check out a pottery store down the road this weekend, depending on my cold. if it is reasonable enough I can just throw my own bowl and lid.

I like the candy dish idea if you have lots of room. I just ordered 10 of the Maggards 6oz containers. They look nice and should help when stacking. We will see.

I looked at wally world and only found the canning jars. Nothing the size i was looking for. I even thought about ordering 10000 jars and selling them. But even if all of you bought 4 or 6 id still have way too many left over.

I’m pretty sure that Glens soap dishes are sugar bowls. I’ve looked at them online a couple of times. Step one is to redesign my bathroom medicine cabinet, as I have some unused wall space. Then the display soap dishes will come into play. The ones I have work well for my current arrangement.

You know, that's a really good point.

I did some 3D printing modelling to create a scale model of one my company's designs for tradeshows. There are a buncha companies that would make low quantities for reasonable prices...

I found some metal tins with lids at dollar tree. They have various ones either in a single pack or a 2 pack for a dollar.

I use an old coffee mug to house a few pucks of Adagio Road Lemon Ice. Smells great while shaving. Doesn't smell like I've been with someone else after toweling off. Picked it up at a clearance price on Esty.

When I travel I pack a small container of Cremo. Slick stuff, A little goes a long way, but no lather. Works well.

There are threads on using Cremo. iIRC, it is usually compounded with other creams.

Do you use a lid to cover the soap in the mug or just leave it open?

I love those containers when I'm travelling and can't fit my full dopp bag in my luggage. Best for creams imho, soaps are annoying to load with small amounts.

I just leave it open. It gets used every/other day so it's not going to turn to dust. Some folks even squeeze the soap out of their brushes, back into the mug.
