A coworker of mine was asking about soaps/aftershaves that are more on the inexpensive side for starting out in wet shaving. My opinion has always been "Proraso" when asked that, but I was wondering if you all had more to add. I feel like Proraso has the best lather for the buck, and their aftershave is really good. But I haven't tried everything of course.
Palmolive shaving cream.

Arko is on Amazon it's pretty good and it's cheap as chips.
Although not a hard soap, The Body Shop's Maca Root and Aloe shave cream is very good.

Van Der Hagen makes a descent shave puck. For a beginner (and experienced too) it's not that bad.
Monsavon. Hard to find these days. Used to be ubiquitous in France around 10-20-30 years ago. Condensed, menthol shaving foam taking the form of a croap in a shave-brush friendly plastic container. Sort of like the condensed Proraso croap, easily obtained at corner stores in the Chicago suburbs from what I can gather... ;-)
When you said "corner store soaps" did you mean shave soaps available at a store locally without resorting to the web?

Arko gets my vote.
The last puck I was able to get locally was Van DER Hagen which I liked okay but these days even that has disappeared. Maybe it's just my area.
I haven't used it myself but i have seen Wilkinson sword shaving soap in both a blue bowl and a black one that's vintage recipe apparently.
Their about $5 in Walmart Canada I think, I've also seen it in Shoppers the IDA and Loblaws.
The Wilkinson shave soaps in the tub are just OK but nothing to write home about. Their shave stick otoh is very good but might be discontinued.Quote:

Lots of information. You can see what's available and check out Obie's opinion on them. I have feeling that he has tried them all.
If your coworker is adamant about a soap puck, then tell him to buy a small bottle of glycerine to add a few drops when making lather. It can turn a lot of soaps into great lather. Other than that, I’m with Kees on the Palmolive cream. Cheap, abundant lather.
Sorry to be late to the party, but you hit my top two low end/high performance soaps--Arko and Proraso!

Corner store is pretty much obsolete since they figured out how to fit 10 cents of soap in a 2 dollar can..
Arko is the best value for money, but you have to buy it online.

I love de Verguilde Hand soap.
Does everything very well.
Very enjoyable European scent.
Supposed to be the oldest in the world.
I buy it on eBay from a seller in the Netherlands.

I love that soap too. The scent is truly awesome. I am mainly into lime and or citrus, but this soap is cheap and it is very good too. I still have enough former coworkers that they drop one in the mail when they visit.
The shave stick is great.
