I have noticed this as well.
I will say that using the creams and soaps in tandem for uberlather is pretty successful. Incidentally, depending on when you bought them, Colleen had made some changes to the formula and I believe that they lather much better now. Mine are the old mix and I use them for uberlather which, again, works out quite well. Contact her directly would be my advice. She is very easy to deal with and pleasant to talk to as well!
Good luck and let us know how you make out!

Notes from the Lather Lab!
Okay, so here is what I did after reading this thread.
I used the orange patchouli creme by itself lathered in a mug with my usual creme amount and usual brush moisture.
The lather was not too great. It didn't want to stay built up.
The next shave (just now as a matter of fact):
I soaked the brush and used my regular creme amount then lathered on the face. It scared up a decent if not thin lather that stuck with and was passable for a shave. At the end of the first pass, the brush really didn't have enough left for another go.
I rinsed the brush out entirely and repeated the process of soaking it and then I used LESS creme by about half (half an almond sized "snurdle") and the result was great! I got a nice thick lather that stuck around after about 30 seconds of face lathering.
Try fooling around with less creme and very hot water and face lathering. It might just be the ticket.
