Does anyone hear use the top shelf English creams, soaps, etc.? I am part of the Wetshavers and those products are real big over there, here it seems you guys are more into the barbershop stuff like Pinaud, etc.
I myself use Truefitt & Hill cream and am slowing working over my face with a striaght. Also what are peoples opinions of the Campbell Latherking Machines on classicshaving.com, I remember one of my great uncles using a sort of lather dispensing machine.
A bunch of the people here use the top shelf soaps and creams. But the main attitude that I have observed is a desireto experiment and try a lot of things. Personally, I was lucky to find a 200 ml bootle of Penhaligon's aftershave in the Lime fragrence. When I did a web search I found that it now cost's about $100 per bottle. The firm is English and has been around since the mid 1800's.
They do have a sampler pac available.
Sorry but I am cheap. I also am pretty happy with what I have. Maybe Christmas I'll get my wife to splerge. :lol:
I have about 22 soaps and creams i work with on a rotation, the expensive stuff works very well and tends to have a great scent, they do have an improved shaving experience. However, I marvel at Burma Shave soap because it is an excellent soap working very well as a shave soap. So here are some advantages with some of the expensive stuff, but even the low end Burma Shave soap is capable of providing excellent shave lather and protection when shaving.
The worst soap is the Burt's Bee's Bay Rum which will not lather well, so if you got that one you need a tube of shave cream that you can hit a drop of in the middle of the soap and use it for lathering. Burt's has a great scent 'tho.

Some time ago on the Yahoo SRP forum this question brought forth a plethora of responses.
Truffitt & Hill, Trumpers, Penhaligons, Burts Bees, Williams, Avon, Homemade soaps, additives that increase specific characteristics of soap. Soaps vs. creams etc
Oh well, HOT WATER! is still the major requirement!

I'm learning more than I can teach about this. I have noticed differences in soaps with some being barely suitable and some being excellent, but since I've only tried 4 different soaps, my "excellent" could easily be someone else's "pretty decent but not up to my expectations".
Last batch I bought was from Ray and was very satisfied with the product. Unless I get some reason to believe that there are much better products available, I'll probably buy his soap again. It's slick, lathers very nicely and smells nice. I'm not sure how much better soap might be able to get. :)
Randy, interesting that you mentioned Penhaligons as my girl friend works for them.
The company originally started as a Gentlemans beauty parlour effectively. You coudl go and have a massage and a shave and a facial etc. A lot of his clients commented that they loved the smell of the place as it was next door to a Turkish baths so he created a fragrance that smelt like it and then it took off from there.
I use the shave creams, Lords (which has now been re-released as Duoro) and Raquets. Both of them are very pleasent smelling and work really well, rich creamy lather and they don't dry out too quick on the face. But they are relatively expensive at around £35 a tube. Although my girl friend gets 50% discount and I only buy the stuff that is already reduced so I think the last two tubes cost me £2.
I will ask my girl friend if they have any samples or stuff that is slightly shop soiled. The shop soiled stuff just gets binned even though there is nothing wrong with the product inside, it just means the tube is a bit marked or dirty from being on the shelf. If I can get hold of any I will offer it up for the cost of postage on a first come first served basis.
By all means count me in on that! I'm using Taylor of Old Bond Street's Sandalwood soap right now and it's another big step up from anything else I've tried yet so my interest has become quite piqued with the fine English products and I would love to have the opportunity to try several different offerings without breaking into my 401K.

don't know what kindof quantities we are talking, but count me in as well if there is a lot,
It seems such a waste they would simply throw pots away because of shelf dust.

I like the creams from Coate,s I have their Rose scent.
I have Massey Caswell shave cream in an Almond scent it's good.
I love e-shaves White Tea, and their Cucumber
as well as the Anthony Sport shave cream.
Also the Art of Shaving Lavender.
For the old time scents Proraso and Musgo Real shave creams work well.

My favorite shave soap is from Italy. The name is Virgilio Valobra. It looks like a big bar of Ivory soap in mother of pearl. It is soft and sticky and can be pushed into a shave mug. It lathers great and does not dry out on my face like many of these hard soaps seem to do.
Well, I happen to really enjoy the Taylor's of Olde Bond Street Lavendar shave cream right now. In fact, I like it so much, I will be getting another tub or two of different scents from Ray's. It lathers extremely well. It dries a little quick for me, but a hit with the brush reenergizes it fast, and it is a very slick lather.

Has anybody tried any True Gentlemen stuff? I haven't tried a lot of soaps/creams but this one seems pretty good. Unfortunately it seems to dry out a little quickly.
I also use Joris which I really like.
I'd love to try the Taylor or stuff but it's hard to get in Canada. Luckily, I'll be in London on a layover for a few hours and am hoping to get my hands on some. Has anybody tried the True Gentlemen or Joris and know how it compares to the Taylor stuff?
