For several years I've been using the wal-mart shaving soap and just decided to try out the body shop's macra root cream. On a 1-10 scale how would these two rate? Compared to the other popular brands I see here colleen's, tabac, castle forbes, etc...?

In reference to the original question here, I have not used the new Maca Root cream yet, I have looked at it, and I will be adding it as soon as my jar of their original cream runs out... it looks to be a good product... Their old stuff is a solid 8 for performance as a shave cream, and I have been using it for over a year...
Just for reference I only rate one cream as a 10 which is Castle Forbes...
I received some for Christmas and used it a half dozen times. This being my first cream I can't compare to others.
It lathers very well with a nice slickness and doesn't dry quickly. The scent is light and pleasant.
Lathering in a bowl is new to me. I've found a heavy soapstone pestle and when heated with hot water holds heat nicely. The lather from the macra root cream lasts in the bowl and doesn't seem to break down.
I normally use Tebac and lather on my face. The Body Shop's macra root cream is a nice alternative.
I was planing to write a review but this question beat me to it.
At the risk of being labeld an SRP heretic, I would advise going to badgerandblade.com, as they've got a great review system with lots of products being reviewed. Read through the posts there to gain a general consensus on how good or poor something is.
To be honest, I like the Van Der Hagen Deluxe soap from walmart, and get great shaves with it. The maca root cream (no personal experience here) is said to be quite lacking compared to even the original body shop cream.
If you wan't to try a fantastic cream that has widely received fantastic reviews, go to bath and body works instead of the body shop. There you'll find
I'm guessing that was supposed to finish up something like "C.O. Bigelow, which is rebranded Proraso." I wholeheartedly agree, it is pretty much all that I use. There is a thread about it on here somewhere.Quote:

Another good, and cheaper, cream is Wars from Poland. Not as unobtainable as you might think...try ebay, or go to a couple of the other shavig forums (like Welcome to ShaveMyFace.com - The world's most comprehensive guide to the art of shaving and men's fine grooming products) and contact a member named Pauldog. He sells it for a little bit of nothing.
As for soaps, Van Der Hagen Deluxe is perhaps the absolute best soap on the market, when you figure price into the equation...cheap as heck, gives a great shave. If that's the one you're using, you're doing ok.
If you want to move into the big leagues, of course there are the famous English creams--Taylors, Truefitt & Hill, and Trumpers...Castle Forbes is amazing, but expensive as all get out.
Soaps--Tabac is almost universally loved, and you can get it pretty cheap with a little google work.
Mitchell's Wool Fat is divisive--people love it or hate it. It's "quirky", so it might be a good basis for comparison.
I personally love the Italian stuff--Valobra shaving sticks and Cella Crema da Sapone are two that I will never let myself run out of.
