Soap, I don't know why, haven't tried too many creams I guess. Soap works well for me.
Right now, I'm gonna go with cream. I'm using some of the Vulfix from Ray at Classicshaving. Really nice lather, nice smell, just an overall better experience.
Taylor's cream, up to three days ago. QED's shave stick soap since then. It gives a really nice thick lather that doesn't seem to dry out as fast. I just dry my face after showering, make one light crossgrain pass with the stick and work a lather up with my brush. This gives enough lather to make three passes (two is my usual). I got the bay rum scent 'cause Charles was out of pine/cedarwood :( . I may try a different scent when I run out (in a year or so).
Wow, that's a tough one. Taylor of Old Bond Street's sandalwood soap is the best soap I've ever used and I really love the stuff. On the other hand, the Vulfix Lavender shave cream is just... heck, I don't know if there are words adequate to describe the texture, richness and fragrance of this stuff. A little dab on the tip of the bristles and it provides a lather unlike anything else I've ever used.
Really like that Citrus Spice shave soap that Ray whips up,.. great scent for summer,... then in the winter I'll switch to sandlewood.
Prefers the cream. Like PapaBull says a lil dab on the bristles and ahhhh
Divine shaving.
I use both. I've been having fun with various scents of Kiss My Face Shaving cream, but I like to go back to Williams now and then.
For me, it depends on my mood.

I use both, but prefer the creams. I do enjoy the extra prep to get a good lather from a soap, but tend to get less irritation from multiple passes when using creams.
I like how slick the Lush Ambrosia shave cream gets my skin, the fact that it moisturises while I shave and lets mee see all the stubble as I'm shaving. Three big plusses for the new shaver.
