Melt and pour - Bay Rum?

I am at the end of a small puck of Col Conks Bay Rum and am really wondering if I want to spend $20 on 4 more pucks or put it into making my own shave soap. I saw Jockys' post (Thanks Bud!) and am wondering if anyone has had experience with making a Bay Rum shaving soap?

If you scrol down, you can see "Specialty Soap Bases" and they have a shaving soap. They also have Bay Rum fragrance oil

So, I figured, get this, or get the big 5lb Shea Butter Jockys was talking about and add more glycerin (amount per pound anyone?) + bay Rum scent.

I love the Col soap fragrance, but it does not last.

Thoughts anyone?

Sounds like you've got the right idea...why not go for it? What have you got to lose? ;)

if you try this you wont be buying store bought soap any more i have been making mine for about 2 years now and i love it i can smell like i want to, get the sweet almond oil , and mix any eo. in for a great shave oil.

Thats quite a good source.
They have a shaving soap base, too.

As for the bay rum scent I would not add a very lot. ask them for a recommended percentage, cause it can be irritating.
(Thats probably why in Col Conk it is only faintly. Had to dose mine down as well)

A trick I use to extend the life of Col. Conk Soap is the following. Instead of pre-shave oil, I use Dr. Bronners soap which has oils in it and I use very little to apply on my face in place of the preshave oil. Then the Col. Conk Soap lathers up faster and richer with less soap from the Soap Cake when I apply it to my face for 30 seconds. In the end, its a money saver and I get better shaving results. (less work with the straight) You can get this castile oil/soap at any health store.

I used pre-shave oils previously, but they were more expensive and great lathering took more effort.

I am very pleased to receive tips from SRP members and now I am giving another back.

Go for it. For what it is worth, I don't see any difference between the shaving soap base and the white soap base (same ingredients listed). You might want to get some bentonite clay to add (1-2 tsp per lb of base) as this gives additional slickness to the soap. Go easy on the EOs as these can be irritating in high concentrations.

I keep hearing "Easy on the EO's". I actually bought 8 oz of Premium Fragrance Oil from WellingtonFragrance.com

So, I am assuming they are not as strong. If I am doing 1 lb batches how many drops/ounces, etc. of Bay Rum should I use? Trial and error?

I am hijacking one of my wife's cupcake trays to use as puck molds . . . .:o . . . if she finds me making shaving soap with her cup cake trays . . . :rant::mace::rant::rant::rant::mace:!!!!!!!

Funny you should ask. Just last week, I melted a bowl of stuff that I bought on e-bay a year ago, by the pound and mixed in some Ogalalla Bay Rum straight from the sample bottle (great stuff, that Ogallala, but hard to spell.) I used the cologne rather than the AF, as it's less expensive. The results were quite satisfactory. In the future, I would be a little more generous with the additive. An amusing anecdote. I had a small bit of melt and pour left in the bowl. I thought I'd try a trick I read about in the forums and poured some hot water into the bowl before I showered. When I dumped out the water, the bowl was empty! It melts at lower tempratures than i expected.

yes its somewhere between 60° and 80°C, depending on the formula and its age.

I have been making my own soaps for years. I get my supplies from the Chemistry Store, The Chemistry Store.com - Serving The Soapmaker, Hobbyist, Student, School and Industry. I use the Olive Oil soap, and add some Bentonite Clay, and some Bay Rum fragrance, or Lavender, and pour it into the little round molds. It is the best soap money can buy.

I've been making my own after shaves as well, my wifes perfumes, and other toiletries, as well as candles.

me and my wife have been making candles for years now we are thinking of trying to make our own soaps and colones and aftershaves i found a book on making prufumes and colones(yeah I can't spell hahaha) that call for vodka and jamacan bay rum as in the drinking kind so it going to be a real party when we start making this

I was going to say, I've gotten on a kick of trying to make my own shaving soap using unscented clearly natural as the base due to it's VERY soft and great WTG shaves i've gotten in it's stock form. I'm planning on cutting 1/2 a bar, putting in some clay and boiling down an oz of dark rum and putting that in. I'll tell ya how it goes :)
