using the "cube" to make uberlather

Hello all!

I've been making uberlather for about the past month now and it has been great! I've been using my AOS sandlewood soap, 100% glycerin and TOBS Avocado cream. Anywho, I also have been using the hydrolast aftershave balm (along with alum bloc and thayers). I was very impressed with the hydrolast aftershave so I thought I'd try making uberlather with the cube. I've tried it twice and both times sucked. I figure I'm doing something wrong and thought I'd probe to see if any other forum members have tried the cube. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Forgive the rookie question, but what's the cube? I'm from the other side of the world and don't have access to (or knowledge of) all the various fancy soaps and creams you have over there.

It is part of the hydrolast method shaving system. It is meant to be used with a DE safety razor which I have no intention of using but I like their AS balm and hear good things about some of their other products and thought I'd give it a go.

Here are some videos and links if you are interested in learning more. I don't know a whole lot about it which is why I introduced the thread. Just wondering if any members have played around with it.

By the sounds of it from the .pdf on one of the pages you linked to, it's intended as a beard prep and face scrub, not a soap per se (according to the method they talk about, their soap paste cream stuff is the real lather, used with the cube post face prep). If you do want to keep using it, you may need to add extra glycerin compared to usual to the uber, but even that may not fix it.

I used it last night just as you said. I used it as kind of a cleanser, steamed my face, applied it again and made uberlather as usual with my shaving soap, glycerin, and cream. Much better this time around. I guess I can play around with it a little bit more but I'm thinking it will probably be just part of the beard prep for now.

I have a cube from my DE days. I've been SR shaving for 6 months now and making great uberlather with a variety of shave soaps. When I use the cube, with the same glycerin and Proraso cream as I use in my other recipies, I get a thin result. Begins to look like an uberlather....but doesn't have the body and lasting power.

Seems that our experiences are similar. As for the cube, I mostly use it as a soap for face and hands....but rarely in shaving.

I thought I was just doing something wrong but you pretty much summed it up. I thought things were going well but it just didn't thicken up. It was too thin and didn't last long at all. I'm guessing the cube pretty much requires the use of the hydrolast cream and activator but I don't think I'm ready for a strict monogamous hydrolast relationship and have no intention of switching to DE. I guess it will just have to work as a kind of pre-shave prep routine. However, the hydrolast AS balm is fantastic.
