I'm looking for a good cake soap for making Uberlather. My first try was a basic "Delux shave soap" made by Van Der Hagen. Not too impressed. Poor lather, and feels sticky after washing it off.
I would like to try a soap with glycerin, but i have no idea what to try. I found lots of good soaps on straight razor designs, bestgroomingtools.com, and classicshaving.com. But I have no idea what to choose. Do you know of a specific soap that would be good?
I looked at this link, but there is no Worship brand.

I make my uberlather from Trumpers sandalwood soap and cream, plus a couple of drops of their sandalwood skin food.
Seems to work great!
Mama Bear has great soaps.

Sorry to derail the topic at hand for a moment, but why make "uberlather"? Is it superor in some way to just using a quality soap or cream, or is it another one of those "personal preference" things for people? :shrug:
Anyways, in regards to soaps I just recently ordered the sample pack from SRD and have to say their soaps are top notch. I am loving the bulgarian rose but at 50.00 aI doubt you would want to go that road for an uberlather. FOr me personally, I really enjoy the blood orange scent as well.

James at Odin's Edge has a 5 year refined Goats Milk Sandalwood soap I have been using that I absolutely love. Very naturals and clean scent. Just right in my opinion. VERY nice question.
To me soap shouldn't get dry very fast . second while you shave you have feeling like it protects your skin from razor. razor just moves very smooth on your face.
i use Tabac.

First of all, notice that there are many opinions on this subject. After having tried some of the products mentioned here, I must tell you that you are setting yourself up for some disappointment. The reason being that usually people like soap A because they hate soap B and vice versa. This is not always true but it happens a lot. Instead, I am going to tell you as a user and a soapmaker what I look for in a shaving soap/cream. A good soap/cream: 1) contributes to beard and skin preparation by softening whiskers and lubricating the skin; 2) provides a well hydrated lather that does not dry out; 3)allows sufficient cushion and glide during the shave; 4) conditions your skin after the shave; 5) is economic; and 6) and has a pleasant scent. Needless to say, the products that excel in all of these areas can probably counted with the fingers of your hand. These products are typically expensive but well worth their price. Once you try these, you would probably not shave again with most of the cheap ones. Do not take me wrong, there are some inexpensive soap/creams that are very good, even if the scent or the conditioning is not the best.
One thing to be particularly aware of is the economy of the product. The price of the product only tells you half of the story. If you buy a soap that cost twice as much as another but gives you twice as many shaves or more, you are no saving by buying the inexpensive one..., it is that simple. I am not big into scents so unless the soap smells like rotten fish, turpentine, hippie, etc., I am usually happy. I prefer soaps that do not have a pronounced scent. Because I have sensitive skin, for me, what often tilts the scale is conditioning. If you do not have special requirements in that front, you will find more products that fit the bill and your budget.
Since you are only looking to make uberlather, you do not need a stand alone product but remember that some soaps do not go well with some creams, just keep that in mind when you select both the soap and the cream.
These are some I like: Mitchell's Wool Fat and Truefitt & Hill. If you are going for budget, Tabac is almost unbeatable. There are also many others that would fit the bill in that price range, Caswell Massey being one of my persoanl favs (that almost everyone else do not like). I have not found the first glycerin-based soap that I have been happy with so I would suggest to stay away from them, you already found VdH ;-).

I'm not as experienced with other brands as some of the guys here, but TGQ creams are very moisturising in my experience, but e ven her soaps are good. I didn't want to try soaps at first for the same reason, but now I shave regularly with her leatherneck soap.

I have tried many soaps through the years. The ones I continue to use are:
Mitchell's Wool Fat, Mama Bear (unscented), Truefitt & Hill and Pre de Province. I love these soaps.
I also recommend Tabac, as well as the relatively inexpensive Caswell-Massey, even though I no longer use them.
Ah, there is so much good stuff out there.

I keep hearing good things about that wool fat soap. Is it good for sensitive skin?

I always like the van der hagen soap, it always lathers up very nice for me!
Soaps and Creams are separate things, and Uberlather recipes are not always good...
I have tried 100's of combo's, some are bad, some are ok, most are good, and a few are excellent...
First the cream, two stand out has the most universally good mixers "Kiss my face" and the Old formula of "The Body Shop" if you can find it... These two mix with just about any soap..
My personal absolute best shaving Uberlather is MWF and Musgo Real and 5 drops of Glycerin... (Lanolin Overload) Nothing has ever beat that...
Another top line Uber is TOBS Lavender and Castle Forbes Lavender with 5 drops of glycerin (English Garden)
If you look in the SOTD threads you will find tons of recipes that we use... Now if I mis-read your post and you were not talking about the actual mixes I am sorry...
Mitchell's wool fat is among the best soaps money can buy, excellent for the skin, as long as you are not allergic to wool (wool alcohols);-).

We always talk about the same soaps. TGQ, which I don't like and think is over rated, IMO. Tabac is great, MWF, great too, Any triple milled soap, but everyone overlooks SRD's soap. They are truly awesome. I used the Lime today, not only does it smell intoxicating, The lather is off the hook, no need to uber anything. One good loading session on my Rooney, transfer to my scuttle and I have ridiculous lather...
I should make a video. I think there soaps can stand up to any of the top brands, and do not get the credit they deserve. I'm impressed each and eveytime I use them, and they are quickly becoming my top soap.
Ditto the SRD soaps! I have not tried the large variety of soaps that many here have, so maybe my frame of reference / opinion doesn't count for much. BUT, I can say that they lather up nicely, stay wet on the face, provide for a nice glide, and smell wonderful. I have the vetiver and opus x, which is a nice tobacco sent and smells better than I do after having smoked a cigar of the same namesake! lol:w
Mama Bear's orange soap is good (all I've tried so far), but shipping for a single puck is a bit pricy.
Tabac is probably my favorite soap. Very slick lather (being tallow based), lots of cushioning & very cheap. Refills are I think $12. I've had a puck for over a year now & used in rotation w/ about 5 or 6 others, I still have about half left! Warning, not everyone likes the scent; some hate it! I happen to love it (I have the EDC too), but I'm not everyone.:D Best to see if you can try a small sample first.

Van Der Hagen actually lathers quite well if you do it right. It took me about a weeks worth of using it everyday to find the right method to get a great lather with it. Before I get in the shower, I fill my mug with hot water covering the soap and brush. I let that sit while I am in the shower. After I am out and ready to shave, I pour out the water and shake off the brush a little. Then I start working the lather with the tip of the bristles in a circular motion in the mug. Depending on the amount of water you use, you can whip it up as thick and fluffy as you want it to be. I like it because it's only a couple of bucks and nobody sells anything else around here in Podunk, Kentucky. I guess most of my fellow rednecks stock their trailers with shave gel instead. Anyway, try different amounts of water and see if that helps the lather. If you like the scent of the soap it's tough to beat the price...except for Williams which is only a buck...but I have yet to try a puck of Williams.
I got a dish of CELLA made in italy soap. it does not have a very strong scent ,which is nice when combined with tebac cream. it produces a very thick and cushiony cream!! my go to combo for sure.

The VDH you have is glycerin. Very good soap and easy latherer. I haven't yet tried MWF. I hear great things, but these come from experienced latherers. I hear it can be challenging to lather MWF but well worth it.
Yes, as far as adding creams KMF is often a choice suggestion. Perhaps just adding glyverin will prove beneficial.
IMO, getting soaps with lots of EO's may not be good for sensitive skin.
As you can see the answer is just as varied as the number of members in the forum. MWF, Tabac, Mama Bears, and TGQ are all mentioned all the time.
One that I like and doesn't get mentioned much is the soaps and creams from em's place. I like all of the flavors that she has. Her companion site has some good info too.
