Since I'm at the VERY experimental stage I'm still using a really cheap drugstore soap. I was looking at the more expensive ones but since I didn't know anyone who shaves straight in my area I couldn't ask anyone.
So the question is...is the money worth it or is the only advantage that it smells nicer?
Yes it does. Run to your nearest Pharnacy store and get Tabac soap, absolute best. Also you can search for Haslinger and Speick.

It does make a difference. I like Taylor of Old Bond Street. It laters up really well.
Taylor's, Truefitt and Hill, Trumper's (the 3 T's); all are superb. Castle Forbes is still better and in a class by itself.
Can you get a good shave with sub-$5 soap--assuredly. The question you need to ask is whether you would rather commute to work in a perfectly servicable Geo Metro, or if the experience of driving a Jaguar is worth a couple of extra bucks?
I'd rather give up a couple of cups of obsenely expensive coffee and spend it on a good (nay, great) shave.

One of the biggest "fads" on the DE forums is Arko Shaving Soap. It's a shave stick, and resembles a sawed off candle. The packaging is archaic, but this little $1.99 stick gets it done. Twice the price of Williaims, but far superior.

ARKO is all I can get where I live, also, it is the only soap barbers here use for shaving. It is not bad, with a strong "cleen" smell to it. It has "waxy" consistency, and it is easy workable into shaving mug. It is made in Turkey and it costs ~0.5 euro's...
