Who's got the hottest shave cream?

I just can't seem to get the shave cream hot as I want to. I want this stuff scalding. I'm trying to use the proraso (Bigalo) cream. I put hot as hell water in a mug for the brush and a ceramic cup for the cream. I fill it up a few times to try to heat the respective container enough to retain the heat. I put the brush in the mug before the shower. After the shower perform the same process again to try to reheat everything to the max temp the tapwater will allow.

After I empty the ceramic mug to lather up the proraso into, it just doesn't seem to retain any heat. What am I missing?

Thanks, this seems to be the final (and most important) step to the best shave my experience level can achieve.

I do bounce back and forth with Tabac as well, which I absolutely love, but can't even get warm....so any tips for that would be great as well.

Ever tried shaving with cold water? You won't have this problem if you do.

a water boiler at the side can heat up pretty good to

It sounds as you could use a good scuttle.
That would retain the heat more than a bowl that is emptied of the hot water before you build your lather in it.
There are several good ones out here, I personally use a large one from
Schwarzweisskeramik.de, but there are several others out there.

Have you considered purchasing an electric coffee cup warmer to place your shaving mug on while you're shaving? I think you can get one at Target or Wal-Mart. That may help you maintain the warmth of your lather.

I put a large pot of water on and get it just under boiling and then put some in my mug with the soap and brush and soak it in there for a minute. Then pour the rest into the sink with the stopper in. When my brush cools down i dip it in the hot water that is still in the sink. This works great for me.

Yes there are many do it yourself schemes for keeping lather hot. Everything from double ceramic cups and hot pots to instant hot water heaters. personally I use an Oskar Scuttle. I fill it with boiling water and the lather is almost too hot to use and it stays that way the entire shave.

Put a mug in your sink and fill the sink w/ hot water so the cup doesn't float or fill with water. Build a lather in a bowl them put the brush in the mug for a few minutes. The more the brush touches the side of the mug the faster it will get hot. Poor man's scuttle that holds more hot water than any practicle scuttle can.

get a scuttle from here... hot lather the entire shave.

I have when hot water was unavailable. Very unpleasent experience, not something I would do by choice.

With my SRD scuttle, I still have hot lather after 15 minutes, 3 passes.

i myself went several routes to find hot lather and after finally building my own scuttle... i figured hot lather really isn't that great.. i mean.. sure it feels nice.. but is it really worth the extra time it takes to warm it? i think i'm ok with room temperature lather.

Go to WalMart with 7 Dollars and buy a Redneck Scuttle. They're in the Lawn and Garden dept. It is called a self watering flower pot. It's a Double Decker deal with a ceramic bowl sitting inside a bigger ceramic bowl.

Im with Johnny , and JPM get a dirty bird scuttle( i have the ig one and love it!!!) or go to walmart and get yourself an electric kettle and redneck scuttle, only thing is u have to play with the heat because if the water gets TOO hot then it will break down the lather and dry it out. Also as i and man people have done go thrift store shopping and find a bowl to fit into another bowl, very cost effective and works like a charm. heres a thread about it

You could drive to the Ginna nuclear plant and shave with some of their discharge water. I'm worried about this hot water obsession.

Yeah, Hot water is not that big of a deal.

If I wanted to get hot water from a nuclear plant it wouldn't be the discharge water. There's alot hotter water than that in those things.

Are people really saying that hot water isn't that big a deal? In that case, neither is having a best badger brush, an old W&B razor, or a tube of proraso. Might as well be a savage with Gillette and a disposable.

It's simply a matter of preference, and my preference happens to be a wicked hot lather.

...BTW I tried the cold water - polar bear style - and I'm NOT into that. Thanks though.

I'm new here but I have been using an old metal coffee cup (could probably find one in a camping section somewhere). By using metal, it seems as though the heat just transfers right to the cream, thus keeping it hot for a good amount of time. The one I have has a very wide opening so that isn't much of an issue. This may be a cheap option if you want to give it a go. Good luck :)
