I recently found a can of that foamy stuff in my bathroom closet, left over from my former life. Neither of my sons wanted it so I offered it to a friend who said he never uses any kind of soap. He shaves with a disposable. He claims that anything he's used on his face, whether soap or cream gives him a severe reaction. He uses nothing but water and finds it to be quite satisfactory. Have any of you heard of this or even tried it yourself?
back in my mach3 days i've shaved in a pinch with both plain water and also with dr. bronners liquid soap.. both are able to give you a shave.. basically all you need is something to lubricate the blade..
it is however.. not recommended.. after a shave with just water.. your aftershave will let you know exactly how he feels.
Back in my Fusion days, I never used any of that stuff.
I just took the razor with me in the shower and got done with it. No worries.
First time I did it, was because I didn't have any goo left in the can. It worked, so I never bothered buying anymore.
Nowadays my cupboard is filled to the rim with creams and soaps:)
I've shaved with just water and a TracII cartridge on several occasions. Those shaves ranged from uncomfortable to very uncomfortable, depending on how hot or cold the water was

I've shaved quite a few times with just water, or bar soap and water, and a straight. It's OK if you're in a pinch, but hard on my skin if I do it often. I would add that I shaved very, very slowly and carefully, and it was a one pass shave done mostly so I wouldn't feel so grubby. I certainly couldn't call that a good shave, and since I'm pretty much always worn a beard it was just edging and my neck that was in peril. I don't even want to think about shaving my chin that way, but I guess it could be done.
I hadn't, until I came here of course! I've learned that when it comes to shaving our members have tried everything there is to try short of using a shard of glass, and I'm sure that's not far off......:wQuote:

Have you thought that maybe his face would benefit from being tought the ways of a proper shave soap and brush. It would be less harsh on his face.

Glass has very similar properties to obsidian and yes it can be knapped in much the same way. so in a sense it has been done for some while. I was talkin a while back about glass blades the problem is that in sharpening they tend to serrate at the edge, but through knapping it can be done. Yes the edge is harsh!
Actually, I was thinking more about someone breaking a beer bottle on a countertop, picking out the largest shard then heading to the bathroom, a quick spray of water (cold, of course) on the face before shaving off 4 days growth with said shard......:roflmao:roflmaoQuote:

update.. i had a strictly water shave with my artist club right now.. i normally do one pass with some light touchup..
well with just water.. i missed tons and should do another pass.. i'm afraid without some cream i'll be in for some serious irritation.. i'm already hurting.. i slathered on some pure aloe vera gel.. and i'll wait till later today to shave proper.. the pure water idea was a bad one.. i don't recommend it...

Yeah, I've offered him some but he's yet to take me up on it.
Shaving soaps or creams provide your face with lubrication and cushion. Water activates these properties. Shaving without a combination is an abortion on your face. Your FACE! You decide what is better.

Theres been a couple of days when I've been in a real rush in the mornings, and invariably forgotten to iron a shirt or something, and I've shaved with my DE and just warm water.
Its Ok I guess, certainly none of the glide and cushion a good lather provides, but it does get the hair off your face...!
Back in the early '90's when I had a graveshift security job, I used to keep a trackII in the cupholder of my car in case I jumped into the car and forgot to shave...I spent that twenty minute drive doing a dry shave...it was very painful, but always taught me to shave at home. Only happened a few times.
Before I started with the straight razor, I did what some of the other gents mentioned. Jump into the shower and shave under the hot shower water with no lubrication. And even then, the Mach 3 blade was over a month old because I didn't want to shell out more money for cartridges.
Wow....even before I ever used a straight I was always a mug n brush man . Life without wonderful luxurious shave soap ? .....Seriously? I just bought some lime shaving soap from Straight razor Designs and have been in lime heaven . Nooooo way could I give that up....gimme the lather thanks !! Besides, that's part of the beautiful wet shaving ritual. Pamper and love thine face,do not rape it ! :angel:
I used to shave in the shower with just hot water spraying on my face. It was okay and it saved me the effort of spreading the foam-in-a-can on my face and rinsing it off again at the sink. "Satisfactory" is about as positive as I could describe it.Quote:
