I feel so ghetto

After reading all the info here, I feel pretty ghetto. I use good ol' Williams hard shaving soap in an old beat up mug with a chip in the handle from where my ex-wife threw it at me in a fit of rage about 8 years ago.

I had an old boar bristle brush (a burma shave I think?) that looked like the dog's breakfast... it was balder than I am so I finally got a new badger brush at least. I also use Royall Lyme aftershave/cologne/splash (can't figure out exactly which category it fits into), again the only a/s I've used for as long as I can remember.

Notice a trend here? I guess I fear change :)

No harm in trying new stuff, but at least you aren't using creame-in-a-can! Hell, I use a goodwill special for my shaving mug and an Omega boar brush with Omega shave soap, so don't feel so bad. By the way, if you guys like the Proraso stuff I strongly suggest trying this. It has eucalyptus oil and gives you that same "cold" feeling that Proraso does. Your best bet for finding it is in your local organic gorcery.

Nothing wrong with using old stuff. It works. I got tons of soaps, but I use Williams' sometimes, too. Honestly, most of the stuff we buy is a waste of money...we get it just to get it, and because we like to experiment around with different stuff. It's an exercise in consumerism. All your setup means is you have more money to spend on razors, your girlfriend/wife, or any other hobbies you may have. :D If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

Even the canned stuff has its uses. A buddy of mine left an almost full can of some shave gel which I use for pre-shave treatment (while stroppig). However, my razor won't touch my face before I rinse all of that crapola off and apply some decent shaving soap. After I run out of the shaving gel, I'll start using the Wilkinson soap/brush for that and C&E brush + one of my decent soaps for actual shaving.

Nothing wrong at all with what you have been using.
I think Williams is a fine shaving soap, I still use it
from time to time. As far as a mug goes - a newer
expensive mug wouldn't do the job a bit better.

Just for the record. I'll bet my brush is at least 35 years old. It was a gift to my father from my mom. It still works great and brings back good memories. I have only one razor that was bought new the rest are ebay specials. My hones and strops are new but thats whats great about this. Its all about the shave not the equipment. And if anyone wants to give me a TI I won't hold it against you.:D :D

Yeah, she bounced it off the middle of my back right between my shoulderblades when I was getting dressed one day. Left a good sized bruise too. That and many many many other reasons are why she's the "ex" and I'm gearing up to get hitched and upgraded to wife version 2.0 here soon :)

BTW, I asked the fiancee how she'd feel about me starting to shave with a straight razor. She liked the idea, but she's scared of them and refuses to watch when I do get one. Fine by me, gives me some alone time heh.

I used to be an auto mechanic. It seemed like every week someone in the shop would get a new tool box, usually some $10,000 thing with lockers on the side and a bunch of other extraneous crap. I never once saw anyone become a better technician because of a new tool box. It's just a place to hold your tools. Same as a mug.
