I can, and have, shaved with nothing more than cold water and hand soap; not very comfortable, and not something I would do by choice, but I can get a smooth nick free shave even so.
I too was an admitted "soap guy" and I never could get my creams to preform up to the level of my top soaps. I have since changed my tune somewhat.
Thanks to "Zib," I went out of my way to experiment with some additional creams including Castle Forbes and Fitjar. I have to say, in my limited experience with high end creams, my results have been almost as good as with my high end soaps.
I think creams offer something that soaps don't and that is a very quick/convenient way to build lather as well as an unlimited variety of scents. I am also starting to see that the cushion/glide comparison between soaps/creams actually holds some water...no pun intended.
I am starting to appreciate both products for what they offer and I would never again limit myself to one over the other when I could have both.
I have soap and cream and seem to get good shaves with either, Often I will mix the soap and cream (few swirls of my L'Occitaine soap and AOS Lavender cream makes a very nice smelling and feeling lather IMHO) they work great together, but work just as well separate :)
