I got a nasty non-shaving cut today and ruined one of my fav. white shirts. That got me thinking about getting some styptic powder. When I entered a search for styptic powder on e-bay, each and every item was for pets. So I have two questions...
1) Would that stuff be safe to use on humans? I mean we're all mammals, right? :cool:
2) How effective would it be compared to your run of the mill styptic pencil, which didn't do much for that cut.

Not really.. It wasn't really big, I had bigger with less blood. It just caught me by surprise. Actually I was contemplating something along similar lines -- my snowboard waxing iron lol.
Try ChapStick. Really.

I use baking flour (for my dog nail trimming styptic). I don't see why it wouldn't work on a human...(let us know how it works out ;) ) I always like to hear feedback before I try something like that, although I don't see how it could hurt you.

Yea and birds can eat strychnine all day long and they're immune to it but I wouldn't advise you to eat it.
Strichnine and shaving nicks don't mix :D
Superglue is used in the medical profession to close up certain (common) types of wounds, but I'm sure it's medical grade superglue. Commercial superglue may (or may not) contain something toxic or reactive.
I used it to glue back the tip of my thumb that I almost completely severed while polishing the Sprock today :D
superglue was issued to GI's in one of the wars (cant remember which one) to close up battle wouneds when medical attention was not available...but the government has also done chemical tests on some of its people....so I dont know if that says much...:confused:
I used to use the liquid bandaid (superglue basically) to close up broken and bleeding knuckles between fights, and the stuff pretty much held my hands together for about 6 months straight at a time...it is great as long as you put enough of it on, doesnt burn either.
I use that stuff for minor scrapes and it's more like clear nail polish than superglue. Not good on real gushers. In any case, that's why God gave us elbows.. To keep the knuckle damage to a reasonable level :D

I did all of my fighting years ago when I was also doing martial arts. My instructors were very particular about us doing knuckle-pushups. That toughened up the skin to the point where on one occasion I missed the guy's head, snapped off an inch thick tree branch close to the trunk and only bruised the knuckle a bit. In retrospect I'm glad I missed with that shot. The guy deserved the beating, but not a serious injury.
Oh...I never fought outside the ring. Most of my issues were from refusing to use gloves when I trained. It really did toughen up the knuckles...but also ever now and then ripped the skin off, of course this was usually near abig match lol. I did private security for a spin, but I never had the throw a punch, just detain people and push them away or get them to the ground, etc. Nothing that required more than a few persuasive nudges.
I wasnt a good fighter because I was always worried if my buddy in the ring was hurt...while I was worrying they were getting ready to come back and hit me lol. :roflmao. Most of the guys I know who are great are really nice guys but when they get in the ring they just want to kill their opponent. That is what makes them so good....I could never get in that mind set....ohwell :(
Anyway, liquid bandaid still held my hands together through all that! It didnt look pretty, but man did it work. I could even do heavy bag work and for the most part it would hold...and if it ripped...just add more liquid bandaid!!! :D
I really do have agreat respect for that stuff (when used in high amounts and multiple coatings....but still impressive).

Terry...just when I had too much free time lol (ya ya...I know I do) The history of superglue huh....well on the bright side at least you werent the guy that sat down and wrote it! Oh hell the govt issued gas mask I have for after the plane hit the pentagon only has partical filters!!! I mean its more than the guys at the trade towers got...but umm...partical filters dont exactly keep out jet toxic fumes!! :gth
Luckily, I got mine after the fact, I wasnt working with the pentagon at that time...now they just issue them in case you walk by an area with asbestos, etc....still the same old filters though...gotta love that govt funding!
If I remember correctly ( early 80's ), the 20/20
report indicated that " the adhesive " which was
compared to Super Glue was used in the hospitals.
It was used to patch together internal organs that
were badly damaged. Esentially they were put back
together like a jig saw puzzle. They interviewed
guy would would have probably died otherwise.
One purpose of the report was to show that while
used in Vietnam with success, the FDA would not
approve it for use inside the US.

After reading their removal page, I realized why it's so good for wounds. CA instantly cures when exposed to moisture!

I know of sterilized strands coming from rats' tails used for eye surgery. The beauty of that method was that it got absorbed and there were no stitches to take out. There's lots of good stuff out there that the FDA won't approve.
A practicing surgeon has recommended super glue to me in the past - if I need to close a wound quickly. Can't remember where, but it might have been outside US as he said they use it all the time
