Cream guys who bowl lather - do you swirl or put a dollop in your bowl?

It never dawned on me to swirl my brush in a tub of cream (soap, yes). I've always used a plastic knife to scoop out a little dollop and drop it in the bowl and build my lather from there.

Of course, I don't know what difference it would make either way but I was just looking at an older thread regarding tub vs. tube and a few guys responded one reason they like tubs was to load their brush by swirling in the tub. Now, I prefer tubs because they're cheaper per ounce but my first cream (Bigelow) came in a tube so naturally I squirted a bit into the bowl. When I got a couple tubs of cream for some reason it never dawned on me to swirl the brush in the tub. I guess it was partly because I didn't want to overload the brush and a little product goes a long way. I can control how much I use by scooping a bit out.

Now, with Cella, I swirl like soap as it's a harder consistency than TOBS, GFT, or T&H and seems to work better that way. But those soft creams are dollop and mix.

If its in a tub I use my finger to put a dollop in the bowl or into the brush :)

You need a snurdler.:)

I put a dollop on the brush and work it into the bowl.

With soft creams I usually just touch the brush to the cream and the proper amount adheres to the brush and from there I usually face lather but I suppose you could use a scuttle too.

Swirl. I find I waste less this way.

I too prefer to use a snurdler. My view is that swirling a wet brush (or even a moist brush) over a tub of cream introduces moisture into the product. But most of us don't leave our cream tubs open to air out as it will dry out the cream in the process. After a while the moisture will accumulate, and as a result the cream may go mushy or, even worse, develop a nasty fungus across the surface.

Now, I know several dedicated tub swirlers will chime in saying this is not the case at all. And perhaps it's just my ODC kicking in, but I prefer to not take any chances when it comes to my shaving creams.

I don't have a "Snurdler" but I use a small demitasse spoon. It's kinda cool....:rock:

As Glen has already pointed out, A refined gentleman uses a snurdler. :banghead:at this point in time....

I have actually made one out of a tongue depressor that I sealed with Poly so scents don't mix. Home made snurdler.(Actually done out of necessity as I have been looking for an old school Japanese tea snurdler thingy!):w

Yeah, I cannot speak for anywhere except where I have lived or anything except what I have used, but I've got several half-used tubs of shaving cream from around 2006 that are still basically in good condition and I am a wet brush swirler. YMMV.

One of those plastic collar stiffeners that come with dress shirts make for a pretty damn good snurdler in a pinch.:)

And, if its your thing, they are also quite handy for taking a pinch of snuff! I actually have a nice set of decorative metal collar stiffeners that came with a particularly nice shirt my dad bought me (I'm too mean to buy expensive shirts); I find these make for quite genteel snurdlers!

I'm a scooper with creams in tubs, but I do prefer tubes. The reason I scoop is that I don't want to 'contaminate' the cream in the tub my allowing water to drip in from the soaked brush, or even any 'contamination'
from the brush it self.

I HAVE considered using my son's silver christening spoon, but I'm not sure I'd live to tell the tale...

I always thought a snurdler was something you found in your skivees after eating Mexican food.

McDonalds uses snurdlers as coffee stirrers. Next time you go to Micky D's get one and use their implement for its intended purpose.

I picked mine up in Little Tokyo at a place that sells Japanese china...little sushi bowls and so forth. $5. It's called a chashaku and is intended to scoop tea during the ceremonial tea service.

Just found one near me... lol no more red neck snurdler for me!!!! time to move up in society and put down the poly sealed tongue depressor!!!

A popsicle stick will work in a pinch, You can coat it with Poly if your so inclined. I still like the little spoons they have at Target and Walmart.
