Where do your unwanted soaps go?

I've recently acquired a couple more soap cakes here lately - and I've gotta tell ya - I'm not at all impressed by one of them in particular! I'd like to give it a few more tries to confirm or deny that this soap is not for my face, but this got me to thinking with what I'd do about this not-so-used cake of soap...

If you guys get a soap you're not pleased with do you just throw it away? Use it up in the shower? Trade with other members? Take up shelf space until you find something else?

Curious to see what you guys think...

Soaps I don't like because of scent, but performs well I usually give away to a beginner to help start SAD :D or trade it for something else.

The few I've tried that have been pure crap have found the way to the garbage.

I like the "give away to a beginner" line. i would never turn down a new soap. Im already getting a little case of SAD. Being new id really like to try a wide range of soaps to find some i really enjoy.

With that being said, if you truly want to get rid of it, PM me, id have no problem working out a deal to save a perfectly good puck of soap.

If I don't get along with anything I don't like it goes straight onto the Buy/Sell/Trade forum or worst case eBay. That's the great thing about SRP; there's always someone out there wanting to try out or discover something new.

With soaps, I give them a good rinse and make sure they are hygienically clean, before leaving them to dry out for a few days by leaving them open.

I'll toss the worst ones, and grate the ok ones in to a big mug with all other products not suited for standalone use.
It actually works pretty well

I save them up for the Meets and give them away if they work as shave soaps if they really Bite then I use them in the shower :(

I have really cut back on buying soaps though, I have picked out the Commercial brands I like now, and the "Artisan" ones I have found very few that I like enough to buy another puck...

The dog eats them. Really, no kidding.

Bath soap.

If I like the scent but it doesn't lather it becomes bath soap. If it's the scent I don't like, I use it for über with other products. If it doesn't lather and I don't like the scent, it goes to the garage for drill bits and saw blades.

What is this "unwanted" shaving paraphernalia you speak of?...

Seriously, I guess I got lucky and tried a product I like fresh from the start, and I do not know enough to want to try anything else yet. It does not seem to suck, and after a few trials, I finally got it to lather well in my mug and on my mug...so I have not ventured out to other products yet.

Dang-it!!! Now you guys have me wanting to try something else...

My unwanted shave soaps find their way into the shower. Today I said adios to a puck of Dr. Dettmar — after two shaves. The thing had as much cushion as an armadillo. Last month two pucks of an artisan soap met the same fate. At this rate I don't need to buy bathing soap.

Mine go into the shower. Although I use a regular shower soap for my body, I wet my face and give the ex-shaving soap a rub, massaging it in for a moment. I find it gives my bristles a head start in the softening department.

I've done the shower thing myself, I had some Goat's milk sandalwood shave soap I got off one of my Bath soap vendors. Great bath soap, lousy shave soap. I'm with Glen, most of the Artisan offerings, I wouldn't buy again. I tend to stick with the commercial stuff. You can always PIF them. That's what we used to do....PIF = Pay it forward.

I don't know how bad these soaps are, but you can try to improve them. You can grate a puck, melt it using a microwave or stove top, add some oils, glycerin, & fragrance oil (optional), blend it together, put the mix into a mug, then use the soap when it cools & takes shape.

It's worked for me. My brother does it all of the time using cheap shave sticks.

I just want you to know every Armadillo in Texas has you on their hit list and obviously you never cradled a baby Armadillo.

I use them to wash my dog, he's not picky about scents or lather.

Some good stuff here guys. I seemed to have picked up one of these small batch artisan soaps with not the best of luck for my face. One of my two newest soaps I shaved with today and had a great smooth shave with no irritation, so that makes me feel a little better (even though it cost 3x less than the other soap!). Ah well, never know till ya try! Tylerman - let me see if I can hook you up brotha!

Same here. What I don't like, someone else may like. Even if the soap's crap, it's a good way to let the others find out about it withouth having to spend money.
I do the same with aftershaves etc. ...

i pass the ones i dont like to my brother. He loves every soap i dont like.
Most of the times are that soap that i cet for birtdays or this kind of days. ;)
Most of the time i buy my self so there ara no misbuys.

You know, life is too short to put up with bad shaving soap. And there are so many to try. I've tried the superlathering response but that just prolongs the inevitable. As for using them as hand soap or bath soap, sure you can do that but often they are not that good for those purposes as well. I just toss 'em so I have room to try new ones.

The point about artisan soaps is a good one. They can be good but often they are not. So buyer beware. Established brands are established for a reason.

I'm with most guys here, I chuck it or give it to a buddy or my dad if he likes it. Good thing is if it sucks ya' never gotta waste the money again. About the artisan soaps, I've seen some I would like to try but have been a little leery b/c of the prices. Anybody got suggestions on some from prairiecreations.com? Also, I am thinking of getting rid of my tabac soap...I'm keeping the ceramic dish, but it's only been used 3 times, and the scent is a bit too powdery for me; plus my face tingles more everytime I have used it...maybe growing an allergy to something in it. PM me if you're interested in trading for cream, soap, AS let me know.

Use them in the wood shop. Drag the threads of screws through the soap and they create less friction in the wood, especially when using small or brass screws in hardwood.

Shower. Always the shower.

If it will lather I shave with it. Waste not want not.

I got one on ebay that lathered no better than low-grade bubble bath soap bubbles. So now I'm showering with it.

All has been said already......

If I am not a fan of the lather but it has good scent then it's shower soap. If crappy scent then gift to a newb. Many have been given that I just had no use for that were good soaps:fim:(cella comes to mind when a friend needed a good soap to learn on).

If the soap doesn't agree with my face. My wife will sometimes try shaving her legs with them.

Into the shower or for hand soap! However, that does not happen any more.

Uber-lather it. Who Knows? :shrug: I have used lots up by mixing with glycerine and Williams. Some are great that way!
Same with AS. Thin it with something you like. Never know until you try.
OR trade it for a Porsche! :)
