Shave Bowl Project - need some input

Hi Guys,

I'm working on a shaving bowl(geez, now is it shave bowl or shaving bowl?) project and I need some help. I'd like to gather a general idea of what you guys prefer when it comes to your soap kit.

Do you:

• Have your soap in one container and lather in a separate bowl
• Just lather on your soap in a mug or in it container - and don't use a bowl to lather
• Have a dedicated soap holder/receptacle for the different pucks you may have, or do you use one container with different soaps as and when you want?
• Prefer a double walled scuttle (with hot water) over a simple bowl as a daily lathering bowl i.e. how important is warm lather when choosing a lathering bowl?

Those are some of the basic questions I'd like to hear your guys answers to. If anyone cares to chat about their preferences I'd be much obliged.

98% of the time I face lather, and for the rest I have a "Redneckscuttle" two bowls, one small for lather and a bigger one filled with hot water where I place the smaller one to keep the lather warm.

I guess what I am saying is that I'd prefer a double walled scuttle, I just haven't felt like spending the money on one since wouldn't use it that much :)

Ok great, thanks so much. So you'd reckon a scuttle is a 'nice to have' but not a 'must have' daily piece of kit?

I like my scuttle. Then I have the choice of using with hot water to warm the lather, or I can just use it as a lathering bowl if I should decide :)

Whether I'm using cream or soap, I always lather in a separate bowl. The bowl I have has a medium depth to it but not so much that the brush clangs on this side of the bowl. In my humble opinion, the bowl material needs to retain heat really well. Also just to be really picky, I like to hold my bowl in one hand therefore when I'm choosing a bowl it needs to have a small base possibly very small pedestal so it fits in the palm of my hand.

Yes, it would be nice to have one for the rare occasions, but I manage perfectly well without one. Although this might change, the first 6-8 months I used a bowl, but switched to face lathering almost two years ago, some day in the future it might happen I switch back to bowl lathering, if so, a scuttle will be high on the list.

Hi, I use an old enamel cup and press my soap into it, then when I'm preparing to shave I fill my sink up with hot water and leave my 'soap dish cup' bobbing around in it. I then whip up a nice lather in the cup and because its made of enamelled steel it keeps nice and warm in the hot water. Very cheap and works an absolute treat!!Attachment 110144

I use a pewter bowl intended for some other purpose. It is about the size of lacquer bowl for miso soup that you would get in a restaurant. It has a small foot. Everything happens in this bowl. Occasionally I polish this bowl and experience a partial rebirth.

Many of my soaps are in the mfr's containers, some have a dedicated dish. I load up my brush in the soap dish and then lather in a seperate larger bowl (I very rarely face lather).

What I do for loose pucks is to place them in a small bowl (roughly shaving soap sized) and press the puck into it for brush loading. When I'm done I remove the puck (let it dry before storage) and clean out the bowl for future use. Call it a temporary soap dish lol

I use a Surabachi as the soap bowl. Scrap soap off of the puck on the bowls indentations. And the place it in the over sized coffee cup(or soup cup) that I just took out of the microwave with hot water in it. For me the system works great.

What did you make it out of and how did you make it?

I use an empty Taylor of Old Bond Street plastic container but would like to try a scuttle. I won't use a ceramic scuttle on the odd chance that I would drop it in my ceramic sink and break the sink: an expensive error - learned the hard way. Your steel one looks light weight enuf to try.

Much like others (Ryan82 for example) I keep those soaps that come in a manufacturer's container (usually a wooden bowl) in that container. I load the brush there, then generally lather in another bowl which is currently a large latte cup (my wife hasn't missed it yet). For pucks that come without a container, I press them into an old coffee mug and there it stays. Have several of those in my soap drawer at present. I add water, soak the brush there, then lather in that cup after draining the water. I put creams on the brush and lather in the latte cup. I do own a double walled scuttle but rarely use it. So many approaches available.

I keep my pucks in the container they come in, load the brush then lather in my double wall scuttle. Sometimes i face lather when I'm in a hurry
