Hi all,
What tallow based soap(s) are people using? Which ranks among the best?
Mitchell's Wool Fat, though touted as a lanolin soap, its base is tallow.
Williams mug soap
Don't know if they rank among the best but I have been using Cella, Vitos Red and Arko.

DR Harris Arlington + Windsor, I like them almost as much as Martin de Candre.
D.R Harris, MWF, AoS, C&S, and sticks of Valobra, Palmolive, LEA, La Toja. All perform excellently.
Tabac, Mitchell's Wool Fat and DR Harris.
Mystic Water
Mike's Natural
I'm using MWF but today it was a sod to lather - normally hard but I generally get a good lather in a bowl. Gave up in the end and just rubbed the puck on my beard then face lathered. It would be great if they did a MWF stick!
Tabac, Tabac and Tabac!
RazoRock has a few tallow based Italian soft soaps I enjoy as well.
Mitchell's Wool Fat, Palmolive shave stick, P.160.
D R Harris, Tabac, MWF, Mike's Unscented, RazoRock Mudder Focker, P-160, Vitos(Cocco), Valobra, Palmolive S/S, Arko.....
ShropshireShaver,
Cella, Tabac & Palmolive shave stick (made in Germany).
The Palmolive shave stick is a real bargain - you used to be able to get them from Tesco's for 0.50 GBP :)
Have fun !
Best regards
Russ
In no particular order: Tabac, DR Harris, Palmolive stick, Monsavon
Mitchell's Wool Fat is the only one I have at the moment. Still working through the samples from srd before I look into buying anymore pucks.
MWF is all I use
Tabac, Eastern Brise from Jabonman, MNS, Cella, MWF in that order. Double O
I really admire you lot that are satisfied with just one soap until it runs out...!
For me, DR Harris and Williams.
For whatever reason, Tabac and MWF just never hit the spot for me.
Mike's Natural Soaps, MWF and Tabac are my favorites.
Oh I've definitely gone through soaps from beginning to end. Namely Tabac, Monsavon and several of Trumper's rose soap. I have been doing this since the winter of 2005/6.
It's just soooooo easy to go out and buy a tonne of soap/cream from day one and then hardly ever go through it...
I was just in Dundee Scotland. You can still get Palmolive sticks at the Tesco, but they are about 1.30 GBP now. I bought 11 while I was there.
For the price, you cant beat em!!
Tabac, Mystic Water and MWF are my favorites.
The two best IMHO are MDC and the limited edition Razorock Italian that I got two years ago(bought two bricks). Definately not the only ones I have, but the question was for the best. I don't look at it as what was the cheapest but best bar none.
Honorable mention goes to La Toja (may she rest in peace:cry:), not the stick but the original with the big cork. Still hoarding mine!

Incorrect. It's stearic acid based, meaning it is not a vegetable soap:
Stearic acid - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
You still can but price has gone up to 80 pence, very good value
Interesting, considering MdC's own website states otherwise:
"It is really a "soap", that is a paste that we realise entirely in the factory as from the saponification between 100% vegetable oils (olive, coconut) and with potasse (Alcali)....."
That being said, I did take quick look at my jar of MdC and saw the reference to stearic acid (and glycerin too), so I'm guessing that it could be considered a hybrid soap.
BTW - thanks for the link. I was very aware of what stearic acid is.
just tried Monsavon.... OMG, you really have to give this a go!!!
Thanks for the link, as I read it, steric acid can come from vegetable like cocoa butter and Shea butter that have a higher % of steric acid than animal fat. So, as my understanding, just because the word steric comes from the Greek word tallow, it doesn't mean necessarily that the stearic acid in the product comes from animal. Making MDC a pure vegetable soap like they advertise in their web site. Please correct me if my understanding is incorrect. Thanks Double O
MdC's website (which is very informative by the way) is believable, so I will tend to agree. As I haven't been on their site recently, can I ask if they state where they source theirs from, i.e. where it physically comes from? I suppose if they're saying 'vegetable', then there is no chance it is animal-based, but going on the basis of how many companies know where their suppliers source materials from, I have made this comment - I am speaking based on experience through my own employer's suppliers... (nothing to do with soaps I might add!).
OK, to get one thing straight - 'stear' that is mentioned on the link above is in fact from Ancient Greek. It may mean meat, and not tallow as the site suggests (Wiki is full of these minor inaccuracies). In the modern language, this actually translates to 'steak'.
I am not doubting the fact that this can be synthesised, but here's another link (this time from Imperial College, a top class UK university) which I hope is equally useful: Stearic Acid
Attention is specifically drawn to the second paragraph.
Hope this helps.
Tabac, MWF and Cella, with the last being my favorite. It lathers the best in my water by far, and provides the most cushion, too.
Playing with Vito's Red now and it seems to be up there with Cella.
Bob
Tabac seems to be doing well here. In the years of shaving I've not tried it.
