Truefitt & Hill 1805

It's been 2 months since I used an English shaving cream. I woke up this morning and decided to try something different. I looked thru my Truefitt & Hill sample pack and picked out the 1805 shaving cream. I don't really have those fancy words to describe smells. When I try to describe cigars, I just say "Earthy", "Spicy" etc. I guess I would say 1805 smells "Classy" and I really wanted to like it.

I soaked my brush while I was showering and applied the shaving cream after I shook most of the water out. I then began face lathering and added a little bit of water at a time until I got a good lather. I really made an effort to make sure it wasn't "dry". First pass went well and the 1805 provided good cushioning and smelled great, also it didn't dry up. The Second pass was the same but towards the end I felt a small burning sensation. While I was applying the lather for the Third pass the burning sensation started to increase. I finished shaving and applied some Truefitt & Hill Ultimate Comfort aftershave balm, that's when it started to really burn. :(

I got a close shave and the 1805 smells great but I'm having the same problems I have with Trumpers. My cheeks get red and there is a slight burning. The lather didn't dry up and flake off, in fact it didn't dry up at all. I really think my skin can't take the strong scented shaving creams or soaps. It's too bad cause I really like some of the scents. For the last 2 months I've been using the Nancy Boy shaving line and haven't had any problems but I would like to try something new. Any suggestions?

An allergic reaction is very much a possibility. Another possibility is that you used too much pressure or angle while shaving and abraded your face, and the shaving cream is irritating the raw skin.

The only thing you can do is try it a couple more times, be cautious about shaving pressure and see what happens. If it burns each and every time it may not be the cream for you.

I'll give my face a couple days off and try it again. Thanks for the advise

Just a thought - I wonder if it's the glycerine that your skin is reacting to. Both types of cream contain this ingredient but I have no idea how much of an irritant it can be for sensitive skins.

Sorry too hear about the burn. I hope it is just the pressure and angle you use so that you can keep using the soaps and creams you have bought.
If not you may want to try the Proraso in the white tub, or the TOBS jeremyn St. both are made for sensitive skin and I think they smell great.
Good cushion and the scent liners enough to remind you of what it is.

I don't think it's the glycerine. All three types of Nancy Boy shaving cream I have contain glycerine. I'm going to buy Razorock Fresco shaving cream soap and Tabac Original shaving soap today. Let's see what happens with those two.

I'm not familiar with those that you mention. Tabac has been reported to cause sensitivity, although very minor, through its scent. But you should be ok with it I think.

I just read that about Tabac. So I'm going with SRD unscented shaving soap and their West Indies Bay. I'm also buy the Razorock Fresco.

Perhaps you could try a slow single pass shave and keep the pressure off? I only do two passes because I enjoy it and don't suffer from any sensitivity, I could easily get away with a single pass shave quality wise.

Nancy Boy is a top notch shaving cream and is one of my favorites. I have the T&H Trafalgar. I have not experienced any skin sensitivity issues, but the scent from the Trafalgar seems artificial to me, whereas the scent from the Signature shaving cream seems natural, if that makes any sense. You could very well have experienced a reaction to whatever T&H uses for the 1805 scent.

I hope the Tabac works okay with your skin. It is a tallow based soap which, in my shaving experience, makes my face feel good and moisturized, regardless of scent. Good luck.

I've been working my way through a puck of Tabac for a while now, and never had a problem.
I would think glycerine should be a fairly innocuous ingredient (but I could be wrong). My guess would be the angle/pressure leading to abrasion.

Its fairly simple. Just put the soap/cream on your face, and leave it there for 20 minutes. If you are having a reaction to an ingredient in the soap, your skin will show it even without shaving.
If there is no reaction, then you are exfoliating a bit too deeply!
I cant touch stuff with sandalwood in it. makes my face red and burns fierce.

This is actually sound advice. It must surely be the simplest way to see what is causing your problem.

I haven't shaved in 2 days and decided to try leaving the shaving cream on my face for 20 min without shaving. After 20 min I used the aftershave balm. 10 min. later I checked my face and saw red blotches around my cheek area. I guess strong scented shaving creams are a big :nono: for me. It's too bad I really like the scent.

Sorry to hear that. The good news is that you should have no problem selling or PIF'ing a high quality cream like T&H.
