I don't know if it will work 'better' but I can say that it will definitely work! I have done this with a number of soaps as I don't like having a puck whizzing around the bottom of a bowl while I'm trying to lather, and I find smooshing grated soap in keeps it nicely in place.
My MWF works really well having gone through this process, but as I haven't used it in any other form, I can't say if its any better worse. :)
Well ...just had me a shave, and the MWF grated and stuffed worked out just fine !!! I loaded up the brush and put it to the scuttle...and BAM !!! Suds every where !!!!
I assume that it wasn't working too well for you in puck form?
Just remember to wash the cheese grater.
I melt my pucks in my microwave and then cool in the fridge, works great for me, just don't overdo the process with to much heat, ruin the soap it will, ruin it I tell 'ya!!!

You made the best possible decision. When those cake soaps come to you in a box they have been sitting on a shelf as stock in several places and they have methods that make them very hard and dense while they're being made. By grating the puck into a cup/container you are not only helping the ingredients to mix up but you are also making it much easier to lather. Its much easier to lather cream than soap right? same goes for this...its much easier to lather flakes of soap then a "hockey puck" of shaving soap. lol. MWF is my favourite and always will be. I started what I believe is the only facebook group for MWF...feel free to join..heres the link:
