It appears we are having an extremely dry winter. I am currently using SRD soap for shaving. But my skin is getting way dried out, it burns before I start shaving just from lathering the soap on my face. Which makes the post shave not very nice even after using aftershave.
Is there a goto soap or cream that is very good at moisturizing and good for sensitive skin? Thank you so much!
I don't know if it is necessarily goto or anything like that but a lot of soaps have a glycerine base, which is what you should potentially look for. It makes the glide easier from what I've seen and at least for me, it doesn't dry me out. That is during shaving at least. After the shave I put some thayers witch hazel on for the added moisturizing for the moment while I am on the hunt for a nice aftershave balm. I am currently using mamabears soaps though, the prorasso cream on occassion as well. I think the air is pretty dry around here myself, but I haven't had any problems with those. Good luck!
Edit: I lived in Michigan for a couple of years, and let me tell you, it doesn't get nearly as dry out here in PA as it does there, I swear any moisture is just sapped out of the air there in the winter, strange for a state surrounded by water isn't it?:shrug:
Mitchell's Wool Fat is great.
nivea extra moisture shave cream is a great choice for you. and its cheap too. :)
Thanks! I am using a glycerin based soap now. So maybe I need to use more aftershave/moisturizer. I am almost out of soap so I may try the mitchell's wool fat. I have seen that a lot lately and it comes in a cool bowl. lolQuote:

I will believe that without question. When I was there I lived in Lansing and it got so dry that without a special body wash etc, my hands would crack open because of how dry. Nice place to shave though because you really cannot comfortably keep a beard, it gets so stiff and itchy in a hurry :gaah: Anyway, I have heard nothing but good about MWF and I was thinkin of pickin some up as well once I run low on the others, or just want a new scent. Suits, any of the following will work well for you:
Soaps: Mitchell's Wood Fat, Tabac, Scottish Fine Soaps, D.R. Harris range, Provence Sante, Institute Karite, Cella, Valobra, Joris, Martin de Candre (pricey, so wait on this one), Klar, Edwin Jagger and Mama Bear. There are others, but this is a good start.
Creams: Xpec (pricey, so wait on this one), Castle Forbes, Trumper range, D.R. Harris range, Taylor of Old Bond Street's Jermyn Street for sensitive skin, Edwin Jagger and Proraso. There are others, but these are a good start.
I would suggest an application of quality moisture cream on a 12hour interval from shaving. I am partial to Eucerin Intensive Repair. If discomfort continues, go to 6hour intervals.

It's not the soap. You have a skin issue from the dryness. I would check out some specialized products in a specialty store. You probably need a dedicated moisturizer. Something heavy duty for at night and lighter for the day.
Wrong. There is a huge difference between a quality moisturizing soap and the cheap Wilkinson sword soap I'm using now which leaves the skin much drier following a shave.
I stopped using my alcohol based aftershave figuring it would dry out my face in the winter. I tried it and it actually has made my face feel very nice (aside from the initial burn). Closing the pores instantly must keep more moisture in and help a lot. Also making sure I over exaggerate my prep helps a lot too. It's been a few days at 0% humidity and my face feels great.
I have the same problem during the winter. Some of my favorites are: MWF, Martin de Candre, and for a cream- Truefitt and Hill Ultimate Comfort. Also using a good Aftershave balm or lotion helps tremendously.
