Quick question:
I am looking to buy my next soap. Have heard great things about Mitchell's Wool Fat. But what is the scent? Am I right to assume it is unscented do to the fact that nothing says what the scent is?
Thanks!

Hmmmm
Thats a hard question to answer. Think of going over to your grandparents house as a kid. You need to be at least 45+ for this to work mind you. Its that old school soap smell.
Kind of like they either didnt know how or didnt care to make the soap smell anything other then old world soap smell.
But its not unplesent its nostalgic I love that soap.
No you are not right to assume it is unscented. The good news is that it has, to me anyway, a very mild soapy scent that does not last long.

What Tarkus said is pretty spot on. I posted a few threads below about my first experience with MWF. I LOVE it for everything a shaving soap is supposed to do (rich, thick lather, cushion and glide, skin conditioning), but yeah, just a real light vaguely 'powder-room' scent. I'm thinking of getting some menthol and a few essential oils and experimenting with different lather recipes. I really love a heavily-scented and/or menthol soap.
I'm another fan of MWF. The scent is very mild and unlike any other soap or cream I've used. It's almost a mild talc smell and pleasant enough that sometimes when I walk by it I'll pull the lid off just to get a whiff of it. It's certainly one of my favorites. :D
Howard :)
Mitchell's Wool Fat has a clean, soapy fragrance that is far from overpowering. It's just the right amount of fragrance, and I find it quite pleasant.
I would say it smells like Ivory soap. Performance is stellar tho.
Awesome! Thanks! Last question: is it a hard or soft soap?
I agree that it's a 'soapy' kind of smell, but there are hints of fern and pine-like notes in there. Some people can pick them up, others can't - and it also depends on how "fresh" the puck that you pick up is.
I totally agree with Obie. I really like the scent of MWF soap.
I can't agree more with what others said about MWF, but I would like to add that due to its neutral scent, it is a perfect match to any after shave lotion or balm!
Most soaps, even those with pretty strong scents leave none behind when the soap is washed off. A soap like Xpec is an exception. The scent lingers and is quite strong. So with most soaps you can use whatever AS you want without fear of any interactions between scents.
The MWF is just a very mild scent anyway.
IMHO MWF has a very mild scent. Clean soap smell that to me is very pleasing. I wish it had staying power, but it does not. Nonetheless it is a great hard soap.
I actually liked the scent MWF shaving soap so much that I bought their regular bath soap. I was a little disappointed that it doesn't smell exactly like the shaving soap but, it still has a nice scent to it..
I got my soap today. It totally does smell like my grandparent's soap. Very very nostalgic. Shaves great! Thanks everyone for the help!
Damn all this talk about the MWF has me sitting here with my finger on the add to cart button. Figure so many great reviews cant be to far off. Thanks again everyone for feeding my newly aquired addiction.

Ha this is funny. The soap i use my wife says it smells like something her grandfather used when she was little. Im halfway to putting MWF in the cart also lol
If you haven't yet, you really should do yourself a favor and try the Mitchels Wool Fat, it's a great soap, lathers great, smells great, and really affords a very smooth shave and is very good for your skin. I love the stuff!
Yeah, you guys with your fingers on the Add to Cart icon should just go ahead and pull the trigger. It seems that there are just some iconic "rite of passage" products in this hobby that everyone has to at least try sooner or later: MWF, Tabac come to mind. If you don't like them, at least you tried them.
edit: Forgot to mention VDH, Williams, Proraso/Bigelow etc., etc.
It seems like a fair amount of people think that MWF smells like fat or dairy products, personally the smell of it reminds me of baby powder.
If I recall correctly. The scent is said to have been based off that of patchouli. However. Most simply say its a soft talc scent.
I read conflicting reports about the use of MWF on sensitive skin...I am inclined to pull the trigger on some, but my skin has a mind of it's own. I use Trumper and Bigelow without incident. Any guidance will be appreciated.
Have any of you had a problem with MWF drying out and looking like it's craked when left out in the shaving bowl?
I would say no...it smells like talcum powder or a clean laundry smell to me...very faint and quite pleasant.
Yes, mine will dry out if I use a hot scuttle and take a while shaving. I just add a little water back to it and lather it up again. If you're talking about the puck itself, mine dries out but doesn't crack unless I leave lather on top of it between shaves, then the left over lather on top cracks when everything dries up. I don't fall in love with soaps and creams and such, but this stuff is awesome.
Ya, the puck itself. Looks like hell after awhile. I usually soak it when I'm in the shower, but I've never had to do that with any other soap. The stuff is truely awesome though!
I don't soak at all. Maybe that's it.
I like the smell and can clearly detect the Lanolin - if you've ever smelled it in hand lotion - and does have that old fashion soap smell for lack of a better description. I don't detect any other perfume type scents - very mild scent compared to others, but not unscented. And yes, the puck is hard and will crack some if left in open shave mug. Doesn't seem to effect lather performance.
Scent reminds me of dryer sheets.
Just got my MWF today and I love it. Like everyone says, scent is very very good and the other traits also, amazing.
I have a number of soaps and MWF is my favourite.
Great protection and lather with a pleasant smell.
