is paste needed?
I have a strop with a rough and smooth leather band and a material and smooth leather band ( like a two piece).
I have used about 20 laps on the cloth like material and 60 on the smooth side of the other piece. I am getting good shaves (for a beginner) so I am curious, do I need a spray for the cloth side?
Or just keep what I'm doing now?

Doing well
Paste is for refreshing an edge. Proper stropping on smooth leather can keep that need at bay for quite a while

Paste can be used to polish and edge for comfort or to revive an edge, depending on the paste… there are many forms, some homemade.
Either way a pasted strop is a more abrasive strop and without the proper technique can damage a good edge quicker.
Until you learn to strop effectively, paste will not help you and may cause more damage than good.
Paste will do what linen and leather can do… just quicker.
Practice stropping on a nylon or Poly strop, they are harder to cut and will give you the same finish until you master the technique.
