I am wondering whether this is a prudent technique. Any beta would be appreciated.
I am a total newb to hanging strops and while working on my technique I have been lifting the edge of the razor while it is still in motion as I rotate it onto the spine.
I found that when I stopped and rotated the razor I made a very slight reverse motion and *gasp* nicked the strop ever so slightly but enough that I had to reconsider my efforts.
Its prudent . . . nicking the strop, not so much!
No, if I'm reading what you're doing correctly, that's the way to do it. Mparker suggested to me some time ago that to achieve smoother stropping (speed comes with time), you should begin the flip of the razor (on it's spine) before the end of the stropping stroke is over. All you're doing to the razor is stropping along the spine when you do this, so no edge damage will occur.

Just be careful not to let it flip all the way over while you're still in motion or you'll nick your strop on the other side of the lap.

I start the flip while still in motion away from mid and start my return stroke while the edge is still in the air ever so slightly so as it hits the strop it is already moving spine first.
Works almost every time and yes, even I nick a strop every once in a while.

Yes, that is exactly what I do - I start to roll before the end, and bring it back down while in motion - just don't over do it on the way down and round it out with too much pressure -
And I too have nicked the crap out of my strop (pasted) before I started doing this, annoying isn't it? I thought I was just too shaky and it was just me, glad to see another strop nicker out there

Its become so second nature to me I had to actually look at what I was doing. Yes I start the flip before reaching the end of the first stroke also but I guess I'm doing it right since I'm not dulling my razors and haven't nicked a strop in a loooong time.
