To the op, the wedges I hone with tape (2-3 layers) are stropped without tape on my Modular Paddle strop with no problems. YMMV.
I have been just using my paddle strop, and my results have been great! I use a paddle strop exclusely now for wedges:)
I have several Union Spike wedges and I hone those with just 1 layer of tape. They strop just fine as normal on my hanging strops. Great little shavers.
I use one layer of tape and a paddle strop, never had a problem
I'm having issues stropping a near wedge razor as well. I'm not sure if the edge is touching the strop enough. The blade is huge and has a lot of friction against the strop. So I'm not sure if I should apply more pressure, or give more slack when pulling the strop. Any advice here? This razor came newly honed, but after I used a few times, its completely dull now. I'm pretty sure its the way I'm stropping.
I've honed wedges and near wedges. also hollow ground and I always use tape. on some I have used as many as 3 layers of tape to get the bevel I wanted. when I stropped I just took my time and stropped. so far I have had no trouble with the edge touching the leather. some time it may not seem like it is but it is. Now I've never used a paddle always just a hanging strop. the natural bend in the leather would allow the edge to touch the strop so mission accomplished. each to his own.
