no in fact doing it right a lot can improve an edge, especially, at least in my experience, the heavier, larger blades.

Perfect practice, makes perfect.
Go by a driving range, and watch guys smacking balls all day long, going every which way but where they intend, they believe they are practicing. But practicing, what?
If you really want to learn to play golf, take some lessons from a pro, then have him watch you practice and tweak your technique.
If you want to learn to strop, find a local mentor and have him tweak your technique. It will cut your learning curve dramatically.
You can learn on your own, but you may be sending your blade out for a touch up.
Help is only a drive away.
