Haha was thinking about the money side as well.
I just got home and thought about another Illinois strop I got that is in great condition. The other has the "fine weave linen". The color and overall appearance seems the same. It's now becoming a thing I have to look into. Like Matt1222 said it seems intentional, but why shipping,storage,performance?

The white stuff sticks to the pan....Won't come off! A dedicated strop pan now!

Beautiful strop. That is an interesting way to clean the linen. Im glad it worked. Looks like a new strop.
I use Ballistol to treat & clean my shell strops or any leather really. It's great for so many thing in your home & shop.
