Puma Green Extrafein Paste

So I've been reading many different things about the Puma Green Paste, Extrafein.

Someone contacted Puma to ask about it, but they mentioned it was a company' secret. (I think it was a question about how many microns)

So nothing much is known about it, other than it is a very superb paste.

I've used the Dovo Red and Black paste in the past, so not in recent memory; but I believe this Puma Green Paste to be superior.

It leaves a very sharp and smooth edge, it's a winner in my book and is highly praised on the German shaving forums.

After regular honing, I use it to finish my knives, razors, wood chisels and plane blades on.
Finish off with regular stropping and all the aforementioned shave arm hair with ease.

I must say it has made my life easier. Good stuff.

Yup, probably Chromium Oxide.

Chrome Oxide which has been used for hundreds of years and capable of producing an amazingly keen and comfortable shaving edge.

I often strop on Chrome Oxide on a Sailcloth strop, (Polyester canvas) between stones while honing to clean an edge.

I also keep several paddle strops loaded on one side with .25 diamond and Chrome Oxide on the other to touch up Plane blades, chisels, and knives. Works especially well on carving chisels and knives.

I use Chrome Oxide from SRD, and Hand America, I think SDR paste is/was Hand America, and pure powder from Kremer Pigment.

I've been under the impression that the Puma paste, being labelled green, and "no. 3" as memory recalls, was analogous to the green Solingen tube paste, which is more aggressive than the Solingen red and black block pastes. Maybe not, as the Puma paste is also appreciated on the French shaving forums. FWIW, I like the edge off the black paste.

I never shaved off of the Dovo Green paste, but Puma labels their green paste as an extra fine paste. I also tried the Dovo Red and Black, but I can't remember liking it as much as I do the Puma extra fine paste :shrug:
I should revisit the Dovo black paste,
I do notice the Puma paste to be a faster cutter than the Dovo ones, so as said, indeed most likely crox, which I seem to dig, a lot.

Yea, they did not want to say, it is just Chrome Oxide that we buy from Kramer Pigments, (or their vendor) at $5 per pound and mix with mineral oil and wax and sell to you at 100 times the cost.

For honing you do not need to add any other abrasives, it works just fine by itself. For polishing they add aluminum oxide to cut metal faster and polish, and it is cheaper than Chromium Oxide.

For most honers a stick or tube of any quality Chrome Oxide paste is a lifetime supply. My pasted razor strop was pasted, maybe 5-6 years ago, it has not needed any addition.

For tools and knives, I add a couple strokes of compound every couple of months, because of the swarf that tools and knives leave behind. I scrape the leather to remove the swarf and give it a couple of swipes from the stick.

I use chromium oxide on balsa and diamond spray on hard felt because they are on a 2-sided paddle strop and that’s the setup it had when it arrived.

Even though the diamond is a finer micron than the chromium oxide, it was suggested to strop on diamond first and finish on the CrOx. The diamond is claiimed to provide a sharper but harsher edge and the CrOx tames it down.

Seems to work well.

Been using Puma paste since I got into this hobby. It’s great product and very convenient between honings.

I like to use it on a loom strop.

I use mine on leather, either a hanging strop or a loom strop. I've tried it on linen but didn't like the sensation. I don't think there's much a difference as to effect though. For knives, I use balsa mounted on a board on a bench. There, I find it important to have a stable surface as the hand-held knife's angle can vary.

I prefer linen or canvas for razors and leather for tools and knives. Tools and knives leave a lot of swarf, leather can easily be cleaned, for smooth leather WD40 will clean and remove Chrome Oxide easily. For rough leather I scrape and lightly reapply.

Linen and canvas hold paste well and on a hanging strop flex and expose fresh grit, it does not take much to achieve excellent results.

Diamonds and CBN will cut deeper and leave a micro jagged edge, Chrome Oxide will smooth a Diamond edge. Diamonds can thin an edge to the point of micro chipping, where a trip back to the stones is needed.

Diamonds and CBN work great on tools and knives. For experimentation paste cardboard, inside of cereal box before you commit a strop to paste. Once pasted, it can never be fully removed.

Well, where I sometimes figured my finish wasn't 100%, the crox fixes everything for me.

Coticule -> crox => Amazing
20K -> crox => Amazing
Thuringer -> crox = Amazing

Even without crox these are some of the finest shaving edges I experienced, I know a lot of people had already figured it out, it just took me a little longer to try paste on strops. I don't regret it one bit.

I'd be happy with any of these edges, this crox really fills in a small gap that I was looking for, it adds that extra 1% that really does it for me. Outstanding shaves.
