Restoring a vintage strop

I just picked up a vintage strop that is a bit stiffer that I would expect. What is the best way to bring it back to the softness it should be?

Some vendors actually offer "strop dressing" but using neats foot oil or mink oil will work very well.

Remember it's like Brylcream, a little dab'll do ya! I used mink oil and rubbed a little in my hands, then worked it into the leather. I set it in the sun to heat it a little and let it soak in, then rubbed the excess off. Depending on how dry it is, repeat a couple of times, but work the first bit in very well by rubbing it fully and let it soak in before you get too carried away.

Depending on the overall condition, I would try using a pumice stone or sandpaper to clean up the surface to get a good baseline 1st.
