Too much pressure?

Here's a question for you all. I n the Dovo manufacturing video, the person at the end is stropping the living heck out of a razor.

Question being that do you think that person is putting too much pressure on the blade? As far as I know your only supposed to put very little pressure to no pressure at all.

I was just wondering... :shrug:

YES. but they are trying to mass produce a blade that's never been sharp before. you definitely do not want to strop like that at home, there's a good chance you'll roll the edge.

I wonder why they show it that way then? Just looks better I guess... but it's unlike Germans to be boastful or flamboyant about such things. They have a very high work ethic from my experience.

Except for the guy they have pinning... they need to check his blood alcohol content level...

He is drawing out the edge into a fin. Once drawn out you can shape it again with light pressure. Once the edge is drawn light pressure and a relaxed strop (not sag, but not hyper taut) can keep the edge going for a long time.

Once it dulls you can either pull out the edge with this technique or hone it up again.

To use this technique you need lots of practice and a very, very taut strop. Really taut (or a paddle). This is probably not for the inexperienced. You can dull an edge this way pretty easy too and then you've got to hone it up, which is probably what you should have done in the first place.

I've heard that some people use the drawing technique mixed with honing to produce better edges, not sure if that makes sense but I suppose to them it probably does. They think they are sharpening the fin I suppose.

But I'd need a link too. If your talking about the guy slapping the razor on the paddle strop he is just stropping it hard. Once you get good you can do that, but only on a razor that is dull. But you can make them shave ready that way. It would be silly to do that to a really sharp edge. Or, if not silly, certainly unnecessary.
